An opulent Petrus very much in the stylistic family of the 1990, this 100% Merlot has a dense plum/purple color and a sweet nose of mulberries, black cherries, some subtle toast and licorice as well as a floral element. A wine of great intensity, a multidimensional mouthfeel and full-bodied, stunning concentration, the 2009 Petrus is everything one would expect of it. Given the sweetness of its tannin, much like the 1990, I suspect this wine will always be “open for business,” appealing even in its youth. Anticipated maturity: 2016-2050+. The Story

Drinking Pétrus may be an unforgettable experience. We has been lucky to have the opportunity to taste most of its great vintages. That is why wine enthusiasts often come to us for advice. First, WeI advise you to choose a good vintage, an excellent one if your wallet allows. If you taste a poor vintage, you will notice how it raises above most other wines of the same vintage, but you will miss the actual point of Pétrus.

Second, purchase wine that is at least 10 to 20 years old, because a young Pétrus is difficult to approach, besides which oak and tannins predominate in its taste. Young Pétrus may be impressive, but it ages fantastically and requires more time than any other Pomerol wine to reach its culmination. Finally, We would advise you to decant the wine with care and well in advance, and also to give it time to develop in the glass. Then you will have the opportunity to enjoy an unforgettable experience.

Little known 50 years ago, this château has seen the rise of a myth about the uniqueness of its wine. The wine’s inimatibility is due to many factors, first of all, an exceptional terroir - 40 meters above sea level, the highest point of the appellation - with a layer of heavy clay soil and an iron subsoil. These are ideal conditions for the expression of the Merlot grape. With such a special terroir, the approach in the vineyard and cellar is traditional and respectful.

The work done in the vineyard is fastidious - severe pruning in the winter, regular ploughing, crop-thinning, de-leafing, manicuring the clusters in the summer - and allows the perfect ripening of the fruit. The grape are manually harvested within two afternoons and sorted before crush.

Fermentation is carried out gently, without any overextraction, in temperature-controlled concrete tanks. The blend, very often pure Merlot, is defined in December and the young wine is aged in 100% new oak barrels.

This property made famous by Madame Edmond Loubat and then by Monsieur Jean-Pierre Moueix, culminates at 130 feet on the plateau of Pomerol. Ets Jean-Pierre Moueix is responsible for the cultivation, vinification and aging as well as the export distribution of Petrus wines.

Wine Information

2009 One of the greatest vintages of the last 60 years, and already a benchmark for its power and natural concentration

2008 Patience and perseverance were needed, with a wet and late start, an average summer,
but a wonderful indian summer allowing a perfect maturity.
Some exceptionnal viticultural successes.

2007 A vintage of challenges, with a very warm spring, a wet and cool summer and a beautiful month of September.
The early maturing terroirs appear to have an advantage.
A reminder of the Mark Twain definition: “Climate is what you expect, Weather is what you get”.

2006 A vintage contrasted by an uneven summer with mixed results. An early, sunny and successful harvest for the Merlots.

2005 A vintage blessed by the gods. A superb summer, dry and hot, but not excessively so. Ideal harvest.
A general success for all the varietals and all the appellations.

2004 A rather successful vintage. The wines lack a bit of charm but their fine constitution makes them a bottle to keep.

2003 A vintage of climatic excesses. Some grapes were sun-burned, creating atypical wines.
Attentive and cautious wine growers succeeded in producing rich wines with great promise.
A particular success in Médoc and for the clay soils of Pomerol.

2002 A difficult climate allowed for the production of easily accessible wines which can be drunk young.

2001 A classic year under estimated after the fanfares of 2000.
The wines are remarkably balanced and already delicious.

2000 A banner year. Great, powerful, structured wines which are worth the wait.

1999 A year without excess. A beautiful abundant harvest having produced wines relatively easy to drink now.

1998 A particular success for the Right Bank thanks to sunny harvests after a very beautiful summer, some very great wines.

Good looking normal size bottle, is in a perfect condition and has by the neck level. Colour is ruby red, and looking healthy and full. On the nose it is intense, refined, ripe, seductive and generous. The taste is full, ripe, focused, perfumed, firm, with silky tannins, full-bodied and with perfectly balanced structure. On the palate it is layered and has blackcurrant, buttery, cedar, leather, plum, tobacco, mint and coffee flavours. The finish is endless, extensive and flavorful. This wine is transparent, intelligent and outstanding. I paid around 3k-5k€ a bottle. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 20-30 years and decant at least over 4h before tasting.

The Petrus 2009 may well have a nose ahead of the 2010 as the two vie for supremacy and in an odd way, at this moment their respective personalities have more in common with the opposite vintage. The 2009 has lost a bit of its glossy veneer and become a tad more detailed and respectable, those pencil lead notes beautifully marrying with the blackberry and raspberry fruit, verisimilar to a Left Bank. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but sturdy tannin, more mineral-driven than the 2009, aristocratic and surfeit with almost indescribable complexity on the finish. I like how this 2009 is growing up, the direction it is heading. Tasted blind at a private lunch in Hong Kong.

Tons of truffle and chocolate make this lush and fleshy Pomerol very seductive. The power and concentration are impressive, but right at the opulent and silky finish there's just a hint of warmth from the alcohol. Drink or hold.

Started picking 18/9 Sep but waited for rains. Mostly picked 1 Oct. Atypical phenological cycle. More like hot places. Acid higher than for most hot years. Very dark crimson. Very subtle and exciting on the nose. Really rich and round and vibrant. Very sweet and exciting. So luscious. Great richness, A certain gentleness of texture. Exciting. Very well mastered – no excess. Very rich too. The tannins very well hidden.

Tasted blind. Mid bright crimson. Mild and well balanced without showiness. Very sweet. Thick, dense and rather essence-like. This should have a long life. Quite refreshing actually! Great savour on the end.

2009 Petrus - 2009 Petrus is deep ruby with purple tints at the rim of the glass. Spice, plums, blackberries, and blueberries, with cinnamon, clay, mint, mocha, and kirsch, make up the complex perfume. From a blend of 98% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the wine is rich, concentrated and packed with surreal levels of glycerin. This viscous, thrilling treat provides a seamless, intensely pure finish of spice, jammy cherries, and chocolate. 100 Pts

If a wine's aroma can be sexy, then this is it: Vibrant mixed spices, sweet, ripe plums, blackberries and violets. The wine has amazing density and richness with Petrus' signature layers of flavours including hint of game, anise and exotic Asian spices that go on and on. This is an intoxicating wine that will be a hedonists' delight in its youth or after decades of aging.

Tasted on the 27th January 2017 in Copenhagen, a bottle from Duclot (negociant who owns Petrus) Bordeaux Collection case of 9 bottles in vintage 2009. Double decanted at 3pm, we tasted it app. 6 hours later. This wine gave nothing, absolutely nothing, was completely shut-down,well-hidden in the doldrums, no indication of grade of richness, depth and length. Far, far too young to taste now, but will it reveal ever its greatness? I hope. We shall see in 5-10 years probably. For me, the rating of this wine at the moment is low. We are speaking of a wine which costs 3.500 Euros per bottle!!

Deep ruby. Intense nose for Petrus, massive layers of fruit and floral notes. Still transparent. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, seductive, vanilla ever so slightly up front at this stage. Powerful Petrus, yet not powerful in the normal sence of the word. Exceptional length. I hope I will taste it again some day.
