La Rioja Alta, S.A. Releases Limited Collection of Viña Ardanza Reserva 2000

La Rioja Alta, S.A., one of the world’s most iconic Rioja producers, is releasing a limited collection of its seventeen-year-old Viña Ardanza Reserva 2000 into the US market.

Over the last 75 years, Viña Ardanza has become synonymous with excellence in Rioja and been recognized by both critics and enthusiasts for its elegance and extraordinary aging potential. This limited release of the 2000 vintage comes 10 years after the wine was first introduced into the US market in 2007, offering wine lovers a rare opportunity to experience its evolution.

“When we first produced this wine in 2000, it possessed all the characteristics that have come to define Viña Ardanza – balance, power, elegance – and we immediately became aware of its tremendous aging potential,” says Julio Saenz, winemaker for La Rioja Alta, S.A.

“After tasting the wine in 2015, and again in 2016, we discovered how beautifully it has aged in the bottle,” he continues. “It has gained complexity and aromatic elegance, while maintaining freshness on the palate from its higher acidity… It’s the perfect representation of how gracefully Rioja can age without becoming decrepit in the process.”

In echoing Saenz’s remarks, Guillermo de Aranzabal, President of La Rioja Alta, S.A., comments “the limited release of Viña Ardanza Reserva 2000 doesn’t only celebrate the ageability of the wine, but is symbolic of our own evolution over the last 75 years… Our approach to producing the highest quality wines has evolved over time, but our pursuit of excellence and commitment to quality remains constant.”

Upon release, single bottles (750ml) of the Viña Ardanza Reserva 2000 will retail for $125.00, and 6-bottle cases packaged in varnished wooden boxes will retail for $750.00.

The 2000 vintage was born from a careful selection of Tempranillo (80%) and Garnacha (20%) grapes sourced from the winery’s vineyards in Rioja. Following stainless steel fermentation, the wine spent 36 months aging in American oak barrels that averaged four years of age.

Weather conditions in Rioja during the 2000 vintage were considered ideal and grapes picked for the wine were in excellent condition, achieving color parameters and sugar levels consistent with the winery’s standards for high quality wine.

History

Five Riojan and Basque families founded the ‘Sociedad Vinícola de La Rioja Alta’ in Haro's Station Quarter. Our first president was a woman: Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárate. Monsieur Vigier, a Frenchman, was the House's first winemaker and the Reserva 1890 (predecessor of today's Gran Reserva 890) is the first wine he made.

Don Alfredo Ardanza, founder of La Rioja Alta and owner the Ardanza winery, proposed a merger of the two companies. To commemorate the event, we produced the Reserva 1904, predecessor of the Gran Reserva 904.

Quality, elegance, innovation, evolution... They are the pillars on which the five founding families erected our winery in 1890 and built a way of living, feeling and producing wines of the highest quality that continue to evolve subtly, perfectly adapting to new tastes.

This is how the permanent pursuit of excellence started; a pursuit that continues into the 21st century with identical enthusiasm. We draw the best from our winemaking tradition and wisdom —our own cooperage, manual racking, long ageing periods, etc.— and combine it with the most modern winemaking technology.

Today, our wines are an international exemplar of the great wines of Rioja and our brands are present in the best restaurants across all continents

Vineyards

We are convinced. A great vineyard is the genesis of an excellent wine. Our particular 'treasure' is over 400 hectares of estate-owned vineyards located in the best terroirs of Rioja.

The Tempranillo variety dominates our plantations, where we also have other local varieties, including Graciano, Garnacha and Mazuelo, which are essential to make our brands and provide them with their marked personality.

Getting and controlling the quality of our grapes is only possible with a limited production (under 5,000 kilos per hectare) and exhaustive control technology applied from the start of the growing cycle until harvest. We also apply cutting-edge technology during vinification, affording us great winemaking flexibility depending on grape variety, the terroir and berry characteristics.

We should highlight our environmental awareness. For example, we do not use aggressive treatments or inorganic fertilisers and we have R&D projects in place to reduce vineyard treatments as much as possible.

Winemaking

In the difficult art of creating great wines, we combine the wisdom of tradition and the state of the art. In addition to the century-old winery in Haro, we have modern facilities located in Labastida where we make wine from our own grapes with the help of the most advanced technology.

Oak is at the core of the ageing process and we therefore manufacture our own barrels —which currently number about 30,000— using completely artisanal methods. With import the wood from the United States and dry it in the open air for two years. Our coopers make every barrel in the cooperage of our hundred-year-old facilities in Haro.

Every six months, we manually rack every barrel under candlelight. It is an art to enhance the development of the wine, removing sediments in a natural way and monitoring each barrel individually.

After a stay in barrels, the wines continue ageing in the bottle, where they polish their personality, rounding off and fully developing all their qualities.
