The Story

THE CHARLES’ WINE represents a world of elegance and indulgence. It is beautifully balanced and captivatingly complex. The quality demands meticulous attention. A fine-tuned dose of unconventional decisions at each step of the champagne production process.

Each wine has its own personality, its own generous tone. The fresh elegance of Chardonnay. The structure of Pinot Noir. The generosity of Meunier. Blending wines of the year with reserve wines is specific to Champagne; the perfect alliance demands exceptional expertise.

Amongst the House treasures, pride of place for the wine-making team lies in an incredible number of wines that have patiently been put aside for reserve. Selected and set aside for their aromatic potential, these wines are destined to play a role in the blending of a Charles Heidsieck champagne. A Brut Réserve cuvée contains a large proportion of reserve wines (40%), representing an average of 10 years of ageing. A blend pledging an unparalleled texture, a signature of the Charles style.

Time represents a 4th varietal for the Charles Heidsieck House.

Wine Information

The elegance and strength of a grande cuvée in a grand vintage. A virtuoso wine.

Having matured in our two-thousand-year-old chalk cellars for over ten years, Charles Heidsieck Brut Vintage 2000 is a perfectly elegant and complex wine. It lingers eternally in the mouth, and has a magnificent structure. This is one of the most awarded Brut vintages in the world.

Vintage 2000

A warm and wet winter was followed by an equally wet spring. First, in May, came the seri- ous heat, which gave a fast owering around June 14. Chlorosis and mold growth were evi- dent. June and August were hot and dry. But if you were like me, and tried to have a July vaca- tion in Champagne that year, you noticed how cold and rainy it was. The weather was almost as bad as at home, with constant rain and local hailstorms.

Everything looked hopeless, but the good weather during harvest saved a decent amount of fresh grapes. Harvest started on my birthday—September 11—and ended in early October. Chardonnay and pinot meunier did better than the delicate pinot noir. The year will become sought after thanks to their magic number. The quality does not look too fancy yet though. The wines are quite light with short lives. However, it is a very enjoyable moment, with its intense exotic aromas of passion fruit and tangerine. I am delighted to recommend some romantic bottles of the successful pink trio William Deutz Rosé, Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé, and Pommery Cuvée Louise Rosé.

Written Notes

Utterly wonderful to sit and look out over a winter-clad Smögen and taste five fine champagnes during a fiftieth birthday dinner. This was without a doubt the wine that I did not want to spit out and that I returned to time and again. Enormously voluptuous and classical. Gorgeously nutty, with creamy Chardonnay character and sunnily replete with orange. Yet another fantastic Heidsieck.

The 2000 Brut is another supple Champagne from Charles Hiedsieck. Medium in body, the wine reveals clean aromas and flavors, with resonating notes of sweet apricot, mango and smoke on the close. This is Lot 080301 12295, disgorged in 2008. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2016. Charles Heidsieck is one of Champagne’s historic houses. Charles-Camille Heidseick was an early pioneer in developing export markets for his wines as far back as 150 years ago. Today, this large estate based in Reims makes wines in an easygoing, pretty style.

Served blind. Towards golden, small bubbles. Brioche, some oxidized apples, minerals, flinty, smokey note, bread crums. Fresh acidity, rounded mousse, fuller, brioche, apples, rounded, fruity, minerals finish. 91

Deep lemony golden developing colour. Wonderfully toasty, autolytic, gunflity nose of ripe apples and pears, bread and fragrant floral notes. The nuanced, charming and appetising nose promises a lot for the palate. Full and smooth in the mouth with well-integrated fine mousse. Aromas continue as on the nose. Perfectly weighty, long and refreshing. Open and drinking wonderfully now until 2020.
