Vintage 1995

Bordeaux / An excellent year for both sides of the Gironde and just the vintage that Bordeaux needed after the rain affected vintages of the previous 4 years. A mild winter and early spring was followed by a dry, hot summer. It did rain in early September but the rain was less than in the previous 4 vintages and, crucially, there was perfect weather from September 20th through to October.

Quality is high across all levels and appellations, with the Merlot-dominated wines of St-Emilion andPomerol being particularly successful. The best wines are very ripe and display good concentration and structure.

Written Notes

Deep ruby, thin ruby rim. Vanilla, some pencil, tobacco, smoke, perfumed, mint and a touch of chocolate. Fresh acidity, ripe and big tannins, needs time, structured, a bit edgy at the moment, good length. Like Lagrange, a Château that is growing on me. 89

1995 Chateau Branaire-Ducru Open, classic and developed nose with dried cassis, blackberries, spicy notes and hints of black tea, tobacco, vanilla and woody notes. Medium bodied with dark, evolved, smooth cassis and blackberry fruit that feels slightly hollow in the mid palate but ads strength on the finish with flavors av black tea, tobacco and vanilla. This is balanced with integrated acidity and tannins but it lacks a bit of intensity and concentration. Still a very nice drink today. 90p Drink now-2018
