The Story

Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilises fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy.

Wine Information

Grange is both Penfolds and Australia's most famous wine and is officially listed as a heritage icon of South Australia. An exceptional vintage, 1998 remains a superbly balanced and sumptuous wine, with all the hallmarks of a great, long-living Grange.

Predominantly Shiraz (97%) with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (3%) from the Penfolds Kalimna and other Barossa Vineyards, with proportions from Padthaway and Magill Estate. Cool spring weather followed by a warm summer and very low rainfall created one of the classic vintages of the last two decades. Fruit quality was outstanding with incredible intensity of flavour, fine tannins and structure. The 1998 vintage of Penfolds Grange ranks amongst the very finest released. James Halliday described it as

Beautifully perfumed and exotic, opulently rich and seductive plum/apricot/ blackfruit/meaty flavours with toasty/malty/savoury oak and fine velvety sweet tannins.

Winemaker comments by Peter Gago. Bright, almost impenetrable dark red. The nose is youthful and intense with dark, ripened Satsuma plum fruits rising above a base of liqueured dark chocolate and licorice. Overtones of malt, toasty barrel ferment and nutty oak meld effortlessly into an exquisitely aromatic offering. The palate displays intense layering of fruit - raspberry, blackcurrant and blackberry - laced with licorice and oak. The power of the fruit at the fore is balanced with ripe velvety tannins, offering an alluring even-textured palate with remarkable length.

Magnum. Still very deep in colour. Sweet and concentrated, and very Grange – absolutely distinctive in its opulence and concentration. After a big nose, the palate delivers barely believable depths of flavour. Utterly bewitching. You have to hand it to them – this delivers on all fronts, and deserves its throne. Just so expressive!

Very deep red-ruby. Smoky, deeply concentrated fruit bomb of a nose: blackberry, dark plum, cassis; creamy vanilla and lightly toasty coconutty oak; and ethereal background notes of white pepper, smoked meats, musky spices, tar and licorice. Profoundly concentrated but velvety-smooth and seamless; impressively muscular and thickly coated with oak, and bound by drying, astringent tannins. Without question the most concentrated Grange of all time, utterly steeped in blackberry flavors; a real show pony. It's also the most alcoholic Grange ever made, and at a declared 14.5% does taste warm and spirity - the first Grange to do so. It also ventures to some degree into the realm of currant and prune. No doubt a brilliant wine, but only time will tell if, with its elevated alcohol and its superripe flavors, this 1998 version ranks with the very best Grange vintages.

Deep crimson. A really beautiful wine with deep set blackberry/ dark chocolate/ mocha/ apricot aromas and underlying cedar complexity. An immensely concentrated and powerful wine with plush blackberry/ dark chocolate/ apricot flavours, fine dense ripe velvety tannins and beautifully season toasty/ malt oak. Finishes long and sweet. A great vintage. 97% Shiraz 3% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, Magill Estate (Adelaide) Padthaway Blend. A mild early growing season was followed by very hot dry weather with virtually all damwater reserves exhausted. An exceptional vintage.

Opaque, blueberry colour. Pronounced, etheric, spirity, hazelnuts, chocolate, very seductive sweet spicy nose with mintiness. Classic Australian Shiraz nose. Full-bodied, intense jammy fruitiness with balancing acidity. Very appealing spiciness and long intense finish. Very intense wine with true Australian style but elegance. Lovely chocolate finish. Drinking already but will keep easily 15-20 years.
