100 points Antonio Galloni

What a treat it is to taste the 2007 Screaming Eagle. As exquisite as it has always been, the 2007 captivates all the senses with its exotic bouquet, resonant fruit and silky, generous finish. There is plenty of vintage 2007 showiness, yet the wine needs time in the glass to fully open up and reveal the full breadth of its stunning beauty. At once light on its feet yet rich and expressive, the 2007 Screaming Eagle shows why this Oakville sight is so revered. Pomegranate, sweet red cherries, roses and lavender are some of the many notes that are woven into the utterly exquisite finish. Readers who have an opportunity to taste the 2007 should not hesitate, as it is simply mind-blowing. (11/ 2014)

98 points Wine Spectator

A supple, sophisticated, elegant and stylish wine that wows you with purity, finesse and understated nuances. Full-bodied, with a core of red and black cherry, currant, mineral and sage, ending with a long, layered, persistent, graceful finish, all in a style that distinguishes itself from most Napa Cabernets.  (10/ 2010)

96 points James Suckling

Wow, love or loath the style, this is full throttle on the nose and palate with pure fruit and raspberry jam. Black currants and blueberries. Full and flamboyant but then holds back with gorgeous berries and milk chocolate. Wonderful length. Fascinating.  (2/ 2011)

The Story

“First and foremost, I will be perpetuating the fresh, delicate style of wine that has been the Screaming Eagle hallmark since 1992. Across two winemakers before me (Heidi and Andy), that style has stayed remarkably consistent, which is part of the uniqueness of this ranch. The character of the vineyard really asserts itself. What will be new is the discovery of the young vine plots, and the ways that we can farm them individually to get the best site expression possible. It is a winemaker’s dream to be able to truly understand and manage a vineyard acre by acre and spend an enormous amount of time out there with the vines,” Nick Gislason, Winemaker.

One would not say that Screaming Eagle offers value versus price, but like Romanee-Conti it exists in another league. There is so little produced, with most of the production remaining in the US to be consumed domestically, that the global market clammers for whatever it can secure. Screaming Eagle is spectacular wine, a massive, fruit forward beast, with incredible dark fruits and power: it is a wonderful, special and breath-taking wine to drink.

Written Notes

Medium-intense, ruby colour. A reserved nose shows ripe black currant aromas with touch of mint and spices, even some floral notes. Medium-bodied and vivid palate formed by lively acidity, velvety tannins and intense fruitiness. Long finish with licorice notes. Elegant structure and complex wine that is still closed. Further ageing is definitely recommended

A gracious, generous Screaming Eagle that can be approached now despite its youth. Often Screaming Eagle needs a decade in bottle before it fully expresses itself but this vintage is generous, reflecting its warm weather conditions. There are an array of spices on the nose with thyme, rosemary and sage followed by mocha and plum on the palate with supple tannins. As with all Screaming Eagle wines, there is a freshness here despite the generous, ripe flavors. Persistent finish. This vintage should keep easily for a few decades.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is purple, and looking bright and deep. On the nose it is open. The taste is with silky tannins, and average in acidity, full-bodied and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has blackberry, coffee, creamy and tropical fruits flavours. This wine is intelligent.
