Rarity and power
Since its first release in 1982, the BILLECART-SALMON Grande Cuvée has revealed all its character to a following of informed wine lovers. This great wine, produced from the finest sites of selected grands crus, comes into its own after spending 10 years in our traditional cellars. This cuvée deserves its title of “Grand Cru” thanks to the meticulous blend of grapes, exclusively from the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grands crus.

Appearance: The Grande Cuvée first delights the eye with the harmony of its pale gold colour and the supreme finesse of its mousse.
Aroma: It then surprises the wine lover with its complex and highly expressive nose, a mix of ripe fruit and toasty flavours.
Palate: The flavour is fine and distinguished, gradually allowing all the power and vivacity of this great wine to enrich the palate.

Serving: Power and finesse make the Grande Cuvée a perfectly balanced wine. As a partner to life’s most special occasions, the wonderful cuvée will accompany the best dishes in the world and will reveal all its complexity when tasted at the end of the evening.

Vintage 1996

Up to this point 1996 has been considered a fantastic vintage which produced classic wines; the best since 1990. A long, dry summer produced grapes of record ripeness with record acidity. Some, including myself, question how the 1996s are aging. The wines are generally characterized by a distinctive rather lemony acidity and very good attack, but some wines now seem terribly austere, while others already seem dangerously short of fruit. None of the subsequent vintages are quite as distinctive as 1996, which in the more successful cases should almost certainly be drunk after the 1999s.

This is a real direct hit with layers of mature fruitiness, sweets, roasted coffee beans and the typical Billecart charm. Expressive and elegant, with substance.

Billecart-Salmon Grand Cuvée 1996 Open, complex and maturing nose, very toasty with golden apples and pears drenched in butter, caramel, orange zest, Tarte Tatin, citrus and smokey notes. Full and racy on the palate with great balance and power. Rich flavors that mirrors the nose with caramelized apples and pears in pastry with butter and citrus. Tightens up on the very long finish with a superbly balanced and racy acidity. Ends on a fresh and mineral note. Excellent as always. Tasted 8 times with consistent notes. Drink now-2023 94p
