The Story

R.D. (Recently Disgorged) is the result of a great vision of Madame Bollinger, R.D. is a magnification of the very best that the Champagne region’s terroir has to offer. R.D. starts as a Grande Année, the prestige cuvée of Bollinger, and is allowed to mature for an extra 8 to 20 years, sometimes more. This special aging allows the wine to maintain a unique combination of freshness and vivacity, while developing delicate and complex aromas. The result is a unique style of its own that is highly acclaimed by Bollinger lovers and true wine connoisseurs. The disgorgement date - clearly stated on the back label - is informational. It does not mean that R.D. should be consumed soon afterwards. Much to the contrary, the R.D. wines are characterized by an impressive capacity to age, not only before, but also after the date of disgorgement.

Vintage 1990

Three excellent vintages in Champagne were 1988, 1989 and 1990. Initially, many considered 1990 the finest of the trio, but that mantle has since passed to 1988. Some of the 1990 champagnes have evolved more quickly than anticipated, and there can be variation among bottles and producers. Winter and early spring saw warm weather that resulted in an early bud-break, making vines susceptible to the spring frost which duly arrived in April. This led to some uneven ripening and differing levels of maturity owing to the second generation of grapes that appeared after the frost damage and thus ripened later. The summer was generally dry and warm, which produced big, powerful, concentrated and full-flavoured wines.

Written Notes

More mute and more potent than the exotic Grande Année of the same year. The wine has acquired R. D. character by this time and it is difficult to predict how long it will be on top. What further complicates the matter is that this R. D. wine is going to be disgorged several times, which makes it almost impossible to predict the development of the bottle one is about to drink. One guess is that this wine is going to peak two years after disgorging into a normal bottle, and three to four years after disgorging into a magnum. The wine itself has a pronounced house-character, with great masculine fleshiness and mushroom notes combined with dark chocolate and windfall fruit.

A 1990 Bollinger RD was not exactly welcome due to my headbanging night prior, but it got me back on the wagon with its tasty and slightly oxidized style. It was disgorged in 2005, eight years ago, which almost fit into my ‘needs at least 10 years of disgorgement’ theory. This was ready to go and enjoyable in its bready, beefy way (93).

Deep golden apricot-hued colour. Full, rich and round honey-toned wine, with fruit that is already showing signs of withering. Sweet yet phenolic and comes with grappa-like characters and spicy complexity. Past its peak already.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is gold, and looking bright and medium. On the nose it is wide, complex and closed. The taste is focused, firm, refined, and dry, and high in acidity, with concentrated, balanced structure and developing. On the palate it is layered and has apricot, bread, mineral and mushrooms flavours. The finish is long. This wine is intelligent and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years.
