The Story

Château Rieussec has been a leading wine in Sauternes for several generations. Ranked as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855, it is made with a subtle blend of Sémillon, Sauvignon and Muscadelle. Production varies a great deal depending on the vintage, but on average is about 6,000 cases (however, none was made in 1977, 1993 and 2012).

Blend:  90 to 95% Sémillon, 5 to 10% Muscadelle and Sauvignon

Ageing: in oak barrels from 18 to 26 months depending on the year, 50 to 55% in new barrels

Wine Information

The weather was generally warm with very varied rainfall. The beginning of winter was mild and dry. It was not until the end of January that beneficial colder temperatures arrived, accompanied by rain.
Bud break began in early April as usual, and the vines then grew quickly, as they had ample reserves of water and the weather was mild. The flowering in June was early and uniform, which is always a promising sign. Temperatures frequently exceeded 35°C during the summer months. Water stress was high but rain in August brought the freshness required for the grapes to change colour and then to ripen perfectly.
Conditions were ideal during the harvests, enabling us to obtain optimal ripeness for each terroir.

Written Notes

Is it too ripe? That’s the only question with this superior Sauternes. Golden honeysuckle nose is just on the blanched cooked biscotti end of the spectrum – more golden honey than lime custard. Serious intensity of flavour, though, and no excess of botrytis or sweetness – it’s all balanced to perfection, save for the slight warmth. The mark with good Sauternes is always when you come back and see different shades, and a second glass looked even better – creme caramel and just-right acidity. Even if the d’Yquem-like final detail isn’t there, it’s a very fine wine. Damn, it’s impossible when I compare everything to Yquem…

Medium brasys colour. Intense classic marzipan lemon curd, lime aromas with herb garden notes. Rich, powerful and expressive with lemon curd, marzipan flavours, amazing mid palate volume and fine bitter tannins. Flavours expand at the finish.
