Record-breaking Jayer sale hits £1.5m

Bidding for a “time capsule” of wines from Henri Jayer pushed Sotheby’s latest London sale to a record-breaking £1.5m. The 12 lots of Henri Jayer alone sold for £902,000 – more than double the pre-sale low estimate – in what has been called one of the “most successful wine auctions ever seen in London”.

New auction records were set for cases of Jayer’s Richebourg 1976 and 1978, with 12 bottles of the former selling for £108,100 and two cases of the latter selling for £211,500 each – triple their high estimate. Seven of the top 10 lots were Jayer, with the rest represented by Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. All top lots were purchased by Asian buyers.

The Jayer collection had lain virtually untouched all of its life, and caused a significant stir before the sale due to the number of full, rare cases it contained.

Head of Sotheby’s wine, Stephen Mould, commented: “The £1.5 million sale total, more than double the low estimate, is a fitting testament to the quality of this extraordinary cellar. We saw buyers from all four corners of the globe competing to secure rare Burgundy vintages from the legendary Henri Jayer.

“As ever, Domaine de la Romanée Conti and Pétrus were in high demand, rounding off a memorable sale – one of the most successful wine auctions ever seen in London.”

The Story

Richebourg is a king of a wine: the colonnade of the Louvre, the Château of Versailles. You are impressed by its finesse, its length and its delicate sensations, endlessly changing. The fact that no element dominates the others enables you to appreciate all of its aromas, on the nose and on the palate. In any given vintage, Richebourg is always one of the last wines to be drunk. Not because it is too aggressive when young; simply because it needs time to reveal its full complexity.

Written Notes

One of my all-time favorite wines, picked up the slack and more than made up for the deflation of the 1985. The color was so dark and young, always a sign of a great vintage. Musk and vitamins took charge in the nose. Twists of citrus, rose and leather danced around the nose as well. The palate was huge, and the finish was humongous, monstrous and gargantuan as if it was King Kong amongst a herd of gorillas. Ok, I know it's not herd, but I can't remember the right word, ok? What is it, gaggle? Tribe? Flock? Any anthropologists out there, let me know. We found out that this bottle came directly from the cellar of Henri. There was a touch of cotton candy, and its fruit got meatier, and its vigor held. The wine kept redefining itself on its finsh; it was an amazing, amazing wine

Medium-intense, tuile red with orange tints. Powerful, intense, rich, refined, complex, ripe black fruits. Rich, elegant, vivid, ripe black fruit, perfumey, floral and spicy. Deliciously rich and spicy wine. A wine to die for! – JL 98p (5/2012)
