The Story

Longview is one of the first vineyards in Australia to plant Grüner Veltliner.

KÜHL - the German word for cool - is named to reflect the cool-climate of the Adelaide Hills and Longview's progressive ethos.

A remarkably versatile variety, Grüner can be made young and light or rich and unctuous. Our KÜHL lands somewhere in the middle. Initial aromas of grapefruit and celery progress to a palate of spicy radish and golden delicious apple, with crunchy acidity and white pepper overtones.

Longview Vineyard is planted to three different Gruner Veltliner clones (HHW 2, HHW 3 and Iby) all on own roots and sourced from Austria. Now 6 years old we are noticing fantastic fruit quality across the board with well controlled vigour.

The Gruner was hand-harvested based on flavour development at 12.5 Baume. It was crushed, de-stemmed and must chilled to 3 degrees Celsius before gentle airbag pressing. Free run and pressings fractions kept separate, only free run used for Kuhl. The juice was then settled and racked with some of the lees returned to the clarified juice to accentuate the mid palate richness of the variety. With our aim to bottle relatively early to preserve freshness the wine was stabilised, filtered and then bottled.

Written Notes

It seems that this famous Austrian white variety has found a new and very welcome home in the Adelaide Hills. The initial impression is pears and minerals and there is good, if slightly punchy acidity. Supple, with good length and a fine, clean finish. Good persistence. Expect to see this grape edge towards the Aussie mainstream in coming years. And for those interested, this is a great introduction.

Score: 90/100
