The Story

Ocean Eight is in the cool Mornington Peninsula, a short drive south of Melbourne. Owned and operated by the Aylward family after their successes with nearby Kooyong Estate, Ocean Eight is focused on Burgundian varieties and influenced by Burgundian techniques.

The Region

Mornington Peninsula is the coolest region on mainland Australia, just south of Melbourne in Victoria and surrounded by ocean on all sides. It has shown great potential for world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

The Fruit

Pinot Noir is sourced from the Estate owned and tended vineyard. 18- year-old vines planted on sandy loam, which has excellent drainage. Fruit is cropped to 2.1 tonnes to the acre.

The Winemaking

A delicate but simple method, with juice going through a cold, slow ferment to maximise aromatics before being gravity fed to underground barrel room where it is stored in barrel and 500 litre puncheons (15% new). Unfined and unfiltered.

The Juice

Bright red in the glass with pink tinge and some cloudiness. Lifted aromatics of wild strawberry, cherry, rhubarb and wet forest floor.

Primal wine with palate bursting of sweet red fruit, wild brambly fruits, natural savoury edge and hints of spice. Sumptuous mid palate with lively natural acids that carry the wine with great length.

13.2% abv with acidity at 6.9 grams per litre.

Written Notes

A beautifully fragrant, perfumed Mornington pinot noir, which offers red fruits in abundance, raspberries, some spices and a hint of nutmeggy oak. Well integrated and a slightly savoury finish. Impressive length. Made from vines yielding a mere two tonnes per acre and from a mix of clones, this is a pinot revealing the glories of the region.

Score: 93/100

Best drinking: should drink superbly over the next eight years.
