The Story

Grange is arguably Australia’s most celebrated wine and is officially listed as a Heritage Icon of South Australia. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climates of South Australia. Grange utilises fully-ripe, intensely-flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds multi-vineyard, multi-district, blending philosophy.

Color: Deep red.

Nose: Captivating, complex, complete.Unravelling aromatics unfurl with air - blue fruitnotes entwined with barrel ferment andmaturation elements; nothing singular, always intandem. Sweet soy, cola and quince paste highnotes escape from an ethereal layer (aniseed,fennel and fresh treacle ginger pudding) waftingabove.

Palate: Dark and liqueur chocolate, laced with Moroccanspices. An underlying tar/graphite blackness islifted by derived fruit/quince pie flavours - a fewyears earlier they may have been more brashlyvarietal and elemental. Pronounced tanninssweep across the palate, although they arecertainly part of the wine, never obtrusive.Long, layered and compelling, this wine is at thespicier end of the Grange spectrum.

Written Notes

Tasted blind. Vibrant crimson. Mint and some TCA on the nose but the palate is really rather gorgeous! I really like the texture of this wine even if the flavour is a bit spoilt by presumably a tainted cork (less concentrated wines would be worse affected). Rich but restrained. Long. My score ignores the TCA. Salty and firm with great plush richness across the palate and some tannins, doubtless exaggerated by the TCA.

Deep purple crimson. Intense rhubarb/ elderberry/ vanillin aniseed aromas with hint of tobacco leaf. The palate is sweet and fleshy with generous elderberry/ black cherry/ liquorice flavours, underlying malty oak and fine slinky dry tannins. Finishes grippy firm. 96.5% Shiraz 3.5% Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Langhorne Creek, Coonawarra and Magill fruit. A season of extremes. Drought conditions prevailed over spring and summer. The hot dry weather was interrupted by heavy rainfall in February. A difficult vintage relying strongly on multi-district fruit selection.
