The Story

Cuvée Louise was created in 1979, but as Madame Pommery would have demanded, this prestige cuvee is a product of the very best plots in the Pommery vineyards, reserved specifically for it. In the tradition of Pommery Nature 1874, Cuvée Louise is the only special cuvee with so little sugar.

Thus the wine naturally expresses its exceptional purity. Behind this apparent simplicity are unique processes at each stage of its elaboration that ensure that Cuvée Louise is the quintessence of the House style.

Vintage Pommerys never let you down, and the prestige wine Cuvée Louise pays Madame Pommery the homage she deserves. Our favourite, however, is the fantastically delicate and subtly mineral Cuvée Louise Rosé, which is an unfortunately rare find. It only makes up five per cent of Cuvée Louise’s production.

The Cuvée Louise vineyard, made up exclusively of the top three Grands Crus: Avize and Cramant for the Chardonnays and Aÿ for the Pinot Noir. Vines on the mid-hillside, vines in the air and vines upland… the plots of land in the Cuvée Louise vineyard are selected both for their location at the heart of the terroir, their performance over the years and the rich aroma of their grapes. And by their nature, they most faithfully convey the subtlety of the Pommery style.

The ultimate expression of a genius woman’s personality. Cuvée Louise owes its name to the visionary, avant-garde woman who gave the world a brand-new style, a pure, fine, elegant style all Pommery’s own.

Vintage 2004

A great example of how large yields do not necessarily mean poor quality in Champagne. As a reaction to the previous year's low yields, the vines produced one of the largest crops on record. The growing season proceeded without major difficulties but the bumper crop called for bud thinning. August brought about cooler weather and some rains, increasing the risk of rot. The massive crop, averaging 13,990 kg/ha, was picked from September 18th onwards. The quality was a pleasant surprise; vibrant wines with appropriate intensity, refined charm and refreshing lightness. This vintage impresses me more and more, and I feel tempted to give it the full five stars. It comes with a rare balance of freshness, lightness, yet fine aromatic intensity. Post-release, this vintage has proven to be slow to age, and elegant wines are likely to keep on ageing gracefully. Dom Pérignon and Louis Roederer Cristal both excelled.

Written Notes

Bright yellow colour with slightly golden hue. Refined nose with complex character, aroma reminiscent of fresh Brioche, ripe Mirabelle, hints of apricots and candied orange peel, fresh hazelnuts and fine white blossoms in the background. On the palate quoting the flavour of the nose, well balanced with fine mousseux, elegant acidity and discreet chalky minerality, a great classic with freshness, excellent depth and length.

Tasted in August 2019 in Helsinki, Finland. One of the 20 champagnes tasted. Elegant and fruity, significant Chardonnay scent on the nose, light texture, lacks a bit bite and concentration compared with other champagnes tasted.

Good looking normal size bottle. Colour is yellow and light. On the nose it is open, youthful, complex, fresh, seductive, charming and pure. The taste is fresh, voluptuous, focused, elegant, robust, refined, and dry, and average in acidity, medium-bodied, with balanced structure and youthful. On the palate it is layered and has white fruits, citrus and mineral flavours. The finish is long, lingering, pure and flavorful. This wine is sophisticated and fine. Perfectly stored bottles are still very worthy and will last well for another 10-15 years.
