History

Deviation Road Winery produces exciting cool climate wines from mature vineyard resources in the Adelaide Hills. Owners Hamish and Kate Laurie continue a five generation winemaking tradition. Devoted to the high altitude sites of the Adelaide Hills and with Kate’s French oenology training, the wines they produce are at once traditional and contemporary.

With a fiery passion to create premium bottle fermented and aged Australian sparkling wines together with textural aromatic whites that can genuinely cellar, their signature style is restrained, elegant and balanced.

For many Deviation Road is best represented by its signature Australian sparkling wine, the Loftia Vintage Brut. A blend of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes hand selected from mature vines on south-facing slopes high in the Adelaide Hills, the Loftia is an accomplished sparkling. Ageing for a minimum of 24 months on lees adds nutty complexity to the fresh citrus, green apple and spring blossom aromas. The palate is crisp, with a lingering, mouth-watering finish.

Deviation Road’s winery and cellar door are ideally located in the picturesque Adelaide Hills near Stirling. The Deviation Road experience combines a spectacular garden setting surrounded by vineyard and heritage listed bush land with a sophisticated wine and regional platters menu.

At Deviation Road every sip reveals a little of the mystery; a taste of the terroir, a glimpse at the season, a hint of the science and a wink to the heritage that crafts its existence.

Enjoy a little deviation with this signature Adelaide Hills winery with a story.

Vineyards

The majority of our fruit comes from the family planted vineyard on Deviation Road in Carey Gully.  Recent additions include other similarly high altitude sites in the Piccadilly Valley, Mt Lofty (highest vineyard in the Hills) and a second site in Carey Gully. All fruit is 100% Adelaide Hills.

Climate
All vineyards we source from are in the coolest climes of the Adelaide Hills, particularly due to site selection at high altitude and/or southern facing slopes providing cooling winds from the southern ocean. The undulations and expositions in the Adelaide Hills means each site has a particular microclimate, giving different dimensions and qualities in the fruit. These subtle variations are vital in creating layers and complexity in the wines, yet retaining finesse and structure.

Soils
Deviation Road vineyard, situated on a 550m high ridge behind Mt Lofty, has well-draining, thin topsoils over broken schist, producing fruit with aromatic intensity. The Piccadilly Valley sites are on soils that are more fertile, comprise friable clay loams over yellow, medium structured clays. Ironstone is generally present and there is good organic matter in the A horizon. The fruit grown here produces wines of piercing acid structure, restraint and finesse.

Winemaking

Our winery is on site with our Adelaide Hills cellar door and home block vines. The converted stone dairy building is ideal for processing small parcels of fruit immediately after they are picked. All of our Australian sparkling wines are made using the traditional method (méthod traditionnelle) with hand bottling and disgorging being carried out in our own winery.

Over the years we have been acquiring the toys that enable us to manage everything ourselves. This gives us the freedom to create exactly the wines we desire, with minimal intervention. Our aim with every wine we produce is to preserve fruit purity and demonstrate the best the Adelaide Hills can give.
