The Story

La Mission Haut Brion is situated in Bordeaux' southern suburb, Talence. From 1919 and until 1983, it was Woltner family, who had owned this property. Under Woltner's reign, La Mission Haut Brion experienced one of its greatest period with string of fine vintages and was considered then as fully on the level with First Growths and sometimes even better than these. In 1983, owners of Haut Brion purchased La Mission Haut Brion and today its Jean Philippe Delmas, who's responsible for this property.

La Mission-Haut-Brion's vineyards (Cabernet Sauvignon 48%, Merlot 45%, Cabernet Franc 7%) lie on a large (up to 18 metres deep in places) gravel bank interspersed with clay. The wine is fermented in temperature-controlled, stainless steel vats and then matured in oak barriques (100% new) for 18 months. The wines of La Mission Haut Brion are rich, oaky and powerful and need at least 10 years of bottle ageing before they should be broached.

Wine Information

Most probably one of the best Mission wines. The wine explodes in the glass then in the mouth, showing first a complex nose then the mouth follows. A pleasant wine of considerable breed, aromatic, full of fineness, showing a heavy truffled and gamy touch on the palate. A very good bottle now but can age for a few more years

Current vintage notes
A dry year, but above all very hot. A very great vintage, difficult to make because
of the heat. Some wines suffered because of it, but on the whole it is a year of great quality.

Vintage 1949

In Bordeaux, the decade culminated in the hot year of 1949, when Bordeaux was hit by an unprecedented period of drought. Cold, rainy weather had hampered germination, resulting in an exceptionally uneven distribution of pollen. This, in turn, led to a record harvest. With the arrival of summer, Bordeaux was subjected to a heatwave like it had never seen before. Temperatures of up to 43°C have been recorded in Médoc. Early September brought massive thunderstorms followed by a period of ideal weather, which lasted until harvest at the end of the month. The already small harvest was made even smaller, but it produced an incredibly juicy wine that was extremely delicious even at a young age. The wines themselves have more backbone and are more elegant than the 1947 vintage. Indeed, these lack the concentration found in the 1945. Mouton-Rothschild, however, is a capable challenger even of the best 1945 and 1947, with its ample body and balance. The dry white wines produced were also exceptional, although no longer very drinkable. Conversely, the Sauternes grapes picked at the end of a record dry October produced unique and noble wines.

Written Notes

This wine had fabulous and catching aroma of truffles and dark cherries. Even if palate wasn't as stunning as nose, this wine was extremely well-composed, in fine balance and fresh. Almost a perfect wine, which will keep 4-6 years more.

Still quite deep colour. Soft sweet fruit – a joy to drink. Perfect now but should drink well for the next 10 years or so. Decant shortly before drinking.
