The Story

The power and elegance of a great Pauillac. Daring, innovative and known for often being the last to harvest, Jean-Charles Cazes defined the style of Lynch-Bages in the 1930's. The wine's distinctive character earns it its place amongst Pauillac's greatest. It combines structure, finesse and elegance. It is generous in its youth and develops more complex aromas with bottle age.

Outstandingly consistent quality

The estate’s reputation as a top quality wine producer took off in 1945 after a series of exceptional vintages. Since then, Lynch-Bages has continued to produce excellent wines, even during years considered difficult in the Bordeaux region. The wine’s deep colour and tannic backbone have become part of its signature style. Jean-Michel Cazes, grandson of Jean-Charles, has worked hard to develop and refine the wine’s supple and smooth structure over the years. Vintage after vintage, the estate’s precise and excellent winemaking techniques have served to firmly establish Lynch-Bages reputation for consistent quality.

Wine Information

2000 Vintage Report by LB

Ageing: Wooden barrels for 15 months (70% new wood) Blend: 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot, 11% Cabernet Franc, 2% Petit Verdot

The winter of 1999-2000 will remain a vivid memory for the inhabitants of the Medoc region following the storm of the 27th December. 2000 is also the story of a vintage in two parts: after a warm winter and wet spring, the first half got off to a bad start. The second half was a total turn-around. This wonderful late summer weather seems to have given Lynch-Bages its rich and superb complexity. An utterly profound Lynch-Bages, this wine has definitely its place in the hall of fame of the few vintages of the century.

Written Notes

71% cabernet sauvignon, 16% merlot, 11% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot; 5.5 g/l total acidity; 13.3% alcohol): Deep ruby-red. Knockout aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, mocha and cedar complicated by scorched earth and tobacco. Big, ripe and dense, with flavors similar to the aromas and a seamless, rich texture. Though powerful and rich, with a sensual mouthfeel, it maintains a graceful, light-on-its-feet quality. Finishes with ripe, fine-grained tannins and excellent length. Still an infant, but clearly a great vintage for this property.

Ruby with garnet rim. Ripe cherries, tobacco, leather, floral, actually tightens with air, getting rougher, or rather more focused. Fresh acidity, almost creamy texture, high of ripe tannins. Layered, mouthwatering finish, long. Wait at least five years.
