The Story

This jewel in the crown originates in the remarkable vineyard that shares its name. A proprietary blend aged in primarily new French oak, Maya showcases the site’s exceptional Cabernet Franc; it is graceful and alluring with an unmistakable pedigree. Fewer than 500 cases are produced each year.

The signature blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from our estate in Oakville, Maya is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Both of these varieties thrive on the iron-rich, rocky soils in the eastern hills of Oakville. Our aim is to find the right combination between the “Maya Block” of Cabernet Sauvignon, which consistently produces the most compelling wine on the estate, with Cabernet Franc growing in adjacent blocks, which adds a new and exciting dimension to the wine

TASTING NOTES
The 2006 growing season began with a cold, wet spring. The cold temperatures delayed bud break: the first signs came the second week in April. This year it seemed the varieties were budding at about the same time. Luckily the cooler temperatures continued while the ground dried out and vine vigor seemed to stay in check. Bloom came during the second and third weeks of May with fully formed berries.
Overall the growing season was mild with two notable exceptions: the end of June saw a quick spike in temperatures in the middle of berry set, but seemed to have no effect on cluster and berry size. The second was a heat wave towards the end of July which saw temperatures soar to over 100 degrees but due to our irrigation program the vines emerged unscathed.

By September it was clear that 2006 would be a late harvest. Though there was plenty of sunshine, sugar accumulation was slow. The first week of October delivered some rain which refreshed the vines and by mid-October the tannins were soft, and sugar and acidity looked in balance for harvest.
2006 Maya
Maya, a blend of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes from our estate Maya’s Vineyards, is a seamless expression of this unique terroir. The 2006 offering is rich and powerful, with a deep, brilliant purple color and marked opacity. Aromatically, the wine is very expressive, showing notes of blackberry, violet, chocolate, and spices. In short, the wine has an intense perfume quality. These aromas translate directly to the palate, with a burst of flavor that expands to include flavors of raspberry, licorice, cardamom, clove, pan d’epice and clay. There is significant tannin and density that should allow the wine to age for quite some time. For drinking now, the wine is weighty and unctuous after a brief decanting, revealing the lush, velvety character that the wine should express in the coming years. 300 cases produced.
