The Tb points given to this wine are the world’s most valid and most up-to-date evaluation of the quality of the wine. Tastingbook points are formed by the Tastingbook algorithm which takes into account the wine ratings of the world's best-known professional wine critics, wine ratings by thousands of tastingbook’s professionals and users, the generally recognised vintage quality and reputation of the vineyard and winery. Wine needs at least five professional ratings to get the Tb score. Tastingbook.com is the world's largest wine information service which is an unbiased, non-commercial and free for everyone.

The Story

Graham's has a reputation as a producer of outstanding Vintage Port for well over a century. These wines are renowned for their remarkable richness, concentration and firm tannic structure: a combination which yields impressive longevity. Graham's Vintage Ports consistently attain the highest ratings in tastings and invariably attract very high bids at fine wine auctions.

Vintage Ports are only made in years of exceptionally high quality harvests, which on average occur two or three times in a decade. The weather in the vineyards is the principal determining factor: conditions must be ideal throughout the growing season, as well as during the subsequent harvest.

Graham's extraordinary quality is the result of the unique characteristics of the five vineyards that contribute to the Vintage Port.

Graham's declares a Vintage Port only in exceptional years, perhaps three times in a decade, and in the intervening years may produce a Quinta Vintage Ports from Quinta dos Malvedos or Quinta do Tua. These Quinta Vintage Ports are aged in our cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia for 10 years or more after harvest, before being released to the market, ready for enjoyment.

Graham’s Vintage Ports are outstanding for their consistent quality and long life. James Suckling’s series of notes for old vintages tasted in 1990 confirm this – how many wines, after 40 or more years, are rated so highly and noted as “will improve with age” ?

Wine Information

Vintage Overview

The first “Declared Vintage” for six
years – the longest gap between
declarations for decades. A very small
but good Vintage similar to some of the
1983's.

The Viticultural Year
1991 produced a very dry ripening period
in the Douro and in the early summer there
was some anxiety as to how the drought
would affect the crop. Despite the very hot
conditions of the summer months it was
fortunate that there was cooler weather in
late August which allowed the grapes to
reach maturity.

Comments
“By the time picking began in the
second week of September the grapes
were in beautiful condition and the
resulting wines had enormous flavour
and bouquet”.
James Symington

Written Notes

Getting better all the time in the bottle. Real blockbuster of a wine that sneaks up on you. Beautiful tar, grape and berry aromas and flavours. It’s full-bodied, quite sweet and reserved, but kicks off at the end with loads of fruit and tannins. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

Top of the tasting out of 31 Vintage Ports tasted. Very good colour. Fine rich concentrated nose. Lovely fruit. Real depth here. Full and quite powerful, but a wine of real richness and intensity. Complete. Marvellous breed. Fabulous long complex finish. Excellent.

"Graham's 1991 Vintage Port gets my nod as the port of the vintage. While keeping in mind that Graham's aims for a sweeter-styled port, there is no doubting the opaque purple/black color, or the explosive nose of black fruits, licorice, spring flowers, and tar. Thick and full-bodied, with a satiny texture and a blockbuster, alcoholic finish, this is a top-notch vintage port.

Ruby. Blackberries, mulberries, some chocolate, spices, dark fruits nose. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, fruity, dark berries, some spices, blackberries, elegant balance and body, long. 93

Graham’s Vintage Port 1991 But muted nose with tar. balsamic notes, warm plummy fruit, prunes and chocolate raisins. Really needs air to get going. Medium bodied but sweet attack with dark, semi dried fruits, chocolate, stewed raspberries, licorice and minty notes. Smooth and long with grainy caressing tannins. Fine structure but on the lighter side of port. Very enjoyable but needs lots of air today Drink now-2033 93p
