The Story

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay celebrates with the rarest of Champagnes the unique character of a particular Pinot Noir grape that of a small, walled, 0.68-hectare plot from the heart of Ambonnay, one of the most distinguished villages for this grape variety in Champagne, and one which has played a very special role in the life of the House of Krug. Krug Clos d’Ambonnay reveals a personality with significant presence, great substance and an amazing length and finesse.

Wine Information

Krug Clos d´Ambonnay 2000 is the expression of a unique walled plot of Pinot Noir harvested in 2000.

2000 was once hot, rainy and stormy. The harvest at Krug’s Clos d’Ambonnay took place in one day on September 29th; it was superbly bountiful with astoundingly rich Pinot Noir grapes. The House of Krug chose to reveal Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2000 because, from the very first tastings, the Pinot Noir grapes harvested glowed with a rare generosity and beauty; they revealed a delightful, balanced character without any excess aromatic intensity. The year 2000 thus succeeded in expressing the full potential of this walled plot with true beauty and poise.

Vintage 2000

A warm and wet winter was followed by an equally wet spring. First, in May, came the seri- ous heat, which gave a fast owering around June 14. Chlorosis and mold growth were evi- dent. June and August were hot and dry. But if you were like me, and tried to have a July vaca- tion in Champagne that year, you noticed how cold and rainy it was. The weather was almost as bad as at home, with constant rain and local hailstorms.

Everything looked hopeless, but the good weather during harvest saved a decent amount of fresh grapes. Harvest started on my birthday—September 11—and ended in early October. Chardonnay and pinot meunier did better than the delicate pinot noir. The year will become sought after thanks to their magic number. The quality does not look too fancy yet though. The wines are quite light with short lives. However, it is a very enjoyable moment, with its intense exotic aromas of passion fruit and tangerine. I am delighted to recommend some romantic bottles of the successful pink trio William Deutz Rosé, Louis Roederer Cristal Rosé, and Pommery Cuvée Louise Rosé.

ID 413063. Bottle number 1008 disgorged in 2013. When this was made, it was still an experiment. The 1995 was the first vintage but it had still not been released. This 2000 was released in early 2015.
Deep gold. Very deep-flavoured – chestnuts? – on the nose. Extremely persistent. Massive dimension; the bubbles almost seemed to struggle to escape. Still remarkably fresh with masses of aromatic development. Big, bold and bright.

A particularly luminous straw-gold colour which shimmers with brightness. Aromas of brioche, caramel and spices. In the mouth, a very fresh taste with rich flavours of tarte tatin, caramel and pastry cream, with a long and slightly lemony finish.

Food & Wine Pairing:

Krug Clos d’Ambonnay 2000 may be enhanced by accompanying it with meat such as a spiced lamb tajines. It can also be enjoyed with a sweet and sour association: a sweet potato mash with a dash of grated nutmeg, or any creative combination with candied citrus fruits.

Shimmering and bright, a luminous gold in colour. On the nose, aromas of brioche and caramel combine with warm spices. Fresh on the palate, this champagne is rich with flavours of apple tart, caramel and pastry cream, with a long and lemony finish.

This 100% pinot noir is characterised by the climatically chaotic 2000. After a clement spring, July saw heavy rainfall and a destructive hailstorm. A warm August and September allowed for bountiful and astoundingly rich grapes – harvested in a single day – and a balanced and intense champagne. Only 5,158 bottles were released, each one individually numbered.
