The magnum we opened now was outwardly in perfect condition. The host of the evening, Ralf Frenzel, had bought three cases of this close to divine champagne direct from Henri Krug some ten years earlier. The wine was youthful and its fill level first class. Decanted 10 minutes. Retained its best qualities in glass for approximately 45 minutes.
In our opinion, this is one of the best 1970s Krugs, with only the 1979 vintage reaching the same level. When we had the chance to taste the same vintage a few months ago, the experience was different. True, then it was an ordinary vintage bottling in a normal-size bottle. Although the wine was the same in both cases, the recorking had been made 16 years later, to the benefit of the Collection. The 1973 Collection opened now had a clearly more youthful and fuller feel.
Light golden colour. Small bubbles moving slowly in tight strings. Really elegant, multidimensional nose with hints of nut, toffee, mint and vanilla. Really full and dense mouthfeel. As if you were enjoying velvety smooth thick cream blended with light toffee and layers of tropical fruit – a very intensive and pure taste experience. The broad mousse with a wide scope caressed the palate gently and peacefully. Refined, long aftertaste. A balanced and noble champagne.

The Story

To the delight of Krug Lovers around the world, a very limited number of Krug Vintage bottles are kept in ideal conditions in the House’s cellars. They are tasted and appraised as they wait to blossom into a second life. The Cellar Master might then decide that some Krug Vintages reveal a new personality and become Krug Collection. Krug Collection is a tribute to time sublimation: maturity exposes hidden facets, depth and new flavours, while gaining structure and complexity. Krug Collection is always a wonderful discovery, a deeper story of the Krug Vintage.

Wine Information

Krug Collection 1973 Magnum
Krug is known for very pricey and high-quality vintage champagnes they mature in their cellars for 6–10 years before recorking and introducing in the market. Krug Collection is a series of their best old vintages stored in the estate's own cellars for 15–40 years until their "second life" begins. The bottles are then given numbered metal plates and sold in very small quantities.

Written Notes

The 1973 Krug Collection Magnum was younger and showed much younger.  There was more of a mineral backbone with lots of zip.  This was very perfumed and had the best of both worlds of young and mature Champagne.  Someone commented it was ‘softer than ’59,’ and there were lighter apple flavors (95M).

The most flattering of these wines – quite a standout. Very layered nose – yet delicate and flirtatious. Go to Burgundy for white. Very lemony, white Burgundy. Much livelier than the '76.Complete. Really dances on the palate, a bit like a trifle. Real reverberation on the palate. 3rd life.
