The Story

Immaculate, powerful, intense nose with purity and clarity of primary fruit characterised by pear, white peach, lime curd and custard apple. There are infinite layers of brioche, grilled hazelnuts, cinnamon quill, shaved nutmeg, black cardamom and almond meal. A thread of graphite in the background adds elegant complexity.

Penetration and drive with incredible shape and frame on the palate. The symmetry of layers, contours and overall balance is precise. Pear, cut lime and nectarine are definite throughout. Sweet spice and elegant oak use sit neatly with the fruit, underlined by a delicate acid line, leading to a palate with effortless length.

Cool destemmed fruit with some skin contact. The juice was settled for 3 days, racked and inoculated with yeast. 100% of the juice was barrel fermented in new French oak barriques and the lees stirred regularly. After 11 months in barrels the various components were blended, fined, cold stabilized and bottled.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

2012 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Cabernet Sauvignon – Tasted December 2015 Release date: March 2016 This year, the label features the artwork of Geoffrey Ricardo, entitled 'Forwards Backwards'. ”Oh yeah. Ripe raspberry, smoky cassis, pure fruit. Elegant and restrained with lovely powdery fine tannins. Fresh. I thought Leeuwin was a chardonnay house?! This is spectacular. Chewy and generous with restraint and harmony. Looking at this in comparison to the 2011, the 2012 is finer and more delicate. Absolutely world class and the technical sleights of hand (oak, malo etc) only work to enhance the charm of the fruit and exacerbate the Wilyabrup characters: man and nature work together in synch. Outstanding. 95 points
