Wine Spectator - Alison Napjus - December 31, 2014

94 Points Highly Recommended "Tangy raspberry and black cherry fruit is underscored by smoke and mineral accents in this finely knit, racy rosé Champagne. Mouthwatering, with hints of apple blossom, lemon zest and creamed almond on the finish. Drink now through 2029."

Wine Enthusiast - Roger Voss - December 01, 2014

93 Points "The latest vintage of Roederer Rosé shows all the finesse of which this producer is capable. It has fruit and the merest touches of bottle age. Red berries shine alongside the mineral texture and the pure line crisp acidity. It's beautiful Champagne that could age longer."

Wine & Spirits - Joshua Greene - December 01, 2014

94 Points BEST OF THE YEAR "This delicate style of saignée Champagne is a Roederer specialty; the firm completed a new cellar in 2008 with a sole focus on rosé. What sets Roederer rosé apart is the beautiful freshness of a wine like this 2009. Its color is a light orange gold rather than pink or red. Its scent hints at pink grapefruit, the flavors ripe and tangy, deepening to red fruit. As a young wine, its austere structure is ideal for oysters. Cellar it and you'll have a wine for the dinner table."

vinousmedia.com - Antonio Galloni - November 24, 2014

92 Points "The 2009 Brut Rosé is an excellent choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Soft and supple on the palate, the 2009 captures the radiance of the year in its inviting, supple personality. Hints of smoke, chalk, red berries and rose petals caress the palate. There is plenty of acidity and overall energy, too, but a bit less of multi-dimensional structure and overall complexity of the very best wines in this range. Still, that is a small critique given just how delicious the wine is. 2015-2023."

The Story

In order for grapes to be used in the creation of a great rosé champagne, they have to attain perfect maturity, which is sometimes difficult to achieve in the changeable Champagne climate. This is why Louis Roederer decided to invest in the vineyards at Cumières, where the shallow calcareous clay soil, which is on south-facing slopes bathed in the light reflected from the banks of the river Marne, enables the grapes to attain optimum phenolic maturity.

A blend of around 65% Pinot noir and 35% Chardonnay, 20% of which is wine matured in oak tuns, the Rosé Vintage cuvée is generally matured on lees for 4 years and left for a minimum of 6 months after dégorgement (disgorging) to attain perfect maturity.

The wine has fruity aromas of wild red berries, followed by floral notes, and the sugary and spicy fragrance of zest; and the aromas of dried fruit and cocoa result from the wine’s vinifying in oak tuns. Rich and full-bodied, the Rosé Vintage exalts the maturity of the fruit. A sparkling wine with an initial impression of freshness, it opens smoothly with almost exotic notes, combined with the pure minerality of the Chardonnay grapes.

Vintage 2009

This warm year started with a cold winter and mild spring temperatures. Early summer was variable but August and September provided ample sunshine and warmth contributing to fine grape health. Pinot Noir especially excelled. Grape harvest, of generally high sugar content yet soft acidity, started on September 8th. 2009 is a year of generous wines that showed well early. An apt example of a vintage of the recent era, in which retaining freshness poses more problems than attaining ripeness. Good grape health contributed to the overall quality, and despite the richness of the wines, heaviness did not end up being an issue. There is quite some heterogenity amongst the year's produce but the best seem truly age-worthy. The vintage's finest include Louis Roederer Cristal and Cristal Rosé, Dom Pérignon and Philipponnat Clos des Goisses.

Written Notes

Rosé 2009, which has a salmon pink colour with golden tints, produces a persistent stream of delicate bubbles.
It has an intense fruitiness with a blend of red fruits (Morello cherry), blood oranges, and vineyard peach, with acidy, slightly candied notes. After a few minutes, nuances of pastries emerge with some delicate autolysis.
The attack is round and fruity, marked by grapefruit and citrus zest.

Its full body and density are sustained by the almost limestone freshness: the freshness and texture blend to give the wine its persistence. The effervescence integrates well into the juicy and concentrated envelope produced by the exceptionally mature flesh of the Pinot noir fruits. Fine notes of lightly roasted cocoa beans add generosity and create a sensation of harmony.
This 2009 Rosé has all the hallmarks of a fine, sunny vintage, with remarkable purity and finesse.
