Grange is an icon, being both Australia's and Penfolds' flagship wine. Grange boasts an unbroken line of vintages from the experimental 1951 and clearly demonstrates the synergy between Shiraz and the soils and climate of South Australia.

Penfolds Grange displays fully ripe, intensely flavoured and textured Shiraz grapes in combination with new American oak. The result is a unique Australian style that is now recognised as the most consistent of the world's great wines. The Grange style is the original and most powerful expression of Penfolds' multi-vineyard, multi-district blending philosophy.

Packaged in laser-etched bottles with identification numbers since the 1994 vintage.

Regional Source: Kalimna, Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Adelaide (Magill) and Padthaway.

Vintage conditions: An exceptional vintage in both quality and quantity. Good winter rain was followed by generally warm to mild and dry conditions throughout South Australia. Vintage was orderly and there was little or no disease.

Grape variety: Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon

Oak maturation: 19 months in new American oak.

Winemaker: John Duval

Colour: Vibrant plum red.

Nose: A fusion of cinnamon and mixed spices with blackcurrant, blueberry and boysenberry fruit; savoury, underlying aromas of earth, cold tea and roast chestnuts; plus barrel-ferment richness.

Palate: Archetypal young Grange with concentration, balance and powerful berry fruit flavours, with blueberry at the core. Tight and structured, although the thick, ripe tannins are shrouded beneath a veil of opulent fruit. Excellent length and persistence of flavour and masterful handling of oak. A very fine Grange that will confidently sit alongside the great 1990.

Peak drinking: 2010-2030

Written Notes

Ruby. Eucalyptus, minerals, blackberries, spices, minty, blueberries nose, scented. Fresh acidity, ripe tannins, blackberries, rich and layered, layered, detailed and long. 96

Intense, spicy, ripe red fruit nose with jammy notes. Absolutely charming nose. Full-bodied, silky texture with gentle tannins, rich and intense fruit, round and supple with lingering finish. – JL 97p (8/2022)

  • 97p

Meaty, savoury and laced with vanilla spice on the nose. Mulberry fruit – rich and stewed in style, with superb persistence. Absolutely integrated in structure, with not a hair out of place. There's a lovely rusty bloodiness on the finish too. This is typically Shiraz and typically Penfolds, in all the best ways.

  • 93p

It was less evolved than the(Hermitage La Chapelle 1997 – 90/100) despite the similar age. In fact this contrast was surprising, the latter now fully evolved with mushroomy overtones and very silky on the palate, with satay and a figgy note. It had a touch of surmaturite.  For me it had lost its punch though enjoyable as an old wine. The Aussie was strutting its stuff full of smoky menthol and eucalyptus, still bright purple, retaining some spicy tannin, the fruit cool and fresh. MP deduced its style was certainly not old world and through the process of elimination took a commendable stab at its South Australian origin and its 15 years + bottle age, though it being a Shiraz was not quite so obvious, the 7% or so Cabernet in the blend was a curve ball Shane Warne would have been proud of! This was obviously a very good bottle, and on this performance probably worth it’s now celebrity price tag!

  • 96p

Medium to full red-purple, still bright after five years, vibrant cherry and plum fruit aromas more than handle the oak on the bouquet; the palate is sumptuous, but not heavy, the cherry and plum flavours tracking the bouquet. The wine has a very long finish, with fine, integrated tannins. Destined to become one of the great Granges. *Five Stars*

Deep crimson. Lovely fresh beautiful wine with crimson plum/ black currant aromas with some liquorice/ mocha notes. The palate is generous and supple with fresh plum/ blackcurrant flavours, ripe fine grained tannins and savoury/ grilled nut oak. Finishes chalky firm but long and sweet. Superbly balanced wine. A great vintage. Best to hold. 94% Shiraz 6% Cabernet Sauvignon Kalimna Vineyard (Barossa Valley), Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Magill Estate (Adelaide)Blend. After superb winter rainfall soil moistures improved. This was followed by mild weather dry weather conditions – resulting in a vintage of exceptional quality.
