A blend of Derwent and Coal River Valley in Tasmania with Henty (Victoria) and the Adelaide Hills, this is living up to its early nickname 'white Grange' as a cross-regional blend. The nose has an airy brightness, showing cooler fruit tones that are well back in the lime and lemon citrus area; some grapefruit too. This has a fine flint and chalk edge to it, as well as a subtle praline-like oak and lees influence - nicely poised. The palate is cut like a diamond, an exercise in clarity and purity; beautifully focused, elegant and yet powerful. Mouthwatering citrus and white peach fruit flavors abound and there's a scintillating thread of acidity that pins everything precisely in place. This is leading edge chardonnay at its absolute finest. Better in a couple of years but why wait.

Score: 98

The Story

Since 1844, Penfolds has played a pivotal role in the evolution of winemaking with a history and heritage that profoundly reflects Australia’s journey from colonial settlement to the modern era. The stories and philosophies behind each label bring a timeless quality, making Penfolds wines special and compelling for collectors and drinkers the world over.

Launched in 1998 with the 1995 vintage, Penfolds Yattarna Chardonnay was the result of one of the most comprehensive and highly publicised wine development programs ever conducted in Australia. The aspiration and independence of mind that the late Max Schubert brought to Penfolds winemaking philosophy inspired the winery to embark on the project of creating a white wine that would one day rival the standards of Penfolds Grange.Yattarna reflects Penfolds patience and continued commitment to this goal, its very name being drawn from the Aboriginal, meaning 'little by little, gradually'. Each vintage provides the opportunity to further raise the quality horizon.

Vintage 2012

Lower-than-average yields in Australia, as across much of Europe. This was blamed on high winds, drought and low fruitfulness resulting from the poor 2011 vintage. Quality, however, was much better than in the exceptionally damp 2011, with South Australia avoiding some of the weather extremes experienced by other states. Strong varietal typicality is a commonly cited feature of the 2012 crop.

Written Notes

Light, fresh green-yellow colour. Refined, bit closed nose with gentle toastiness, spiciness and ripe apricots, honeydew melon and apples. Dry, crisp, broad and intense palate with fresh lemon and white fruit flavours, touch of toastiness and lingering long aftertaste with gently spicy tones. Elegant and harmonious wine that needs at least 3 hours decanting to open if served now. At its best in 2025-2030, but will last for longer. Serve now with langoustine avocado salad and lime dressing.

Derwent and Coal Valley, Henty, Adelaide Hills. 8 months in barrel with 45% new and the rest one year old. 13.2%. pH 3.21. TA 7.0g/L. $150.
Shows some sulphide funk on the nose – winemakers at play. There’s real body underneath though and real layers of fruit. Starts off with cool white flowers, white peach and a distinct absence of obvious oak. The palate is excellent, successfully straddling the bracing acidity and milky lees and oak inferences. The acid is a little forceful perhaps, but there is shape there, I spent some time with this and think it’s really impressive – one of the best Yattarna releases in many years. Yes please. 18.7/20, 95/100
