History

Aalto is a joint project founded by Mariano García, chief winemarker of thirty years at perhaps the most famous Ribera del Duero brand, Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini, former head of Consejo Regulador de Ribera del Duero. The cooperation that started in 1998 has in the meantime received tremendous attention of the wine enthusiasts of the world and a multitude of praise from the experts. Ribera del Duero, next to Rioja, is one of the distinguished wine appellations of Spain, specializing in producing excellent wines using the local variety called Tinto Fino (resembling Tempranillo). Aalto manages over 40 hectares of old vineyards (between 50 and 100 years of age) in the at the altitude of 700 to 850 meters.

Aalto wine, now finally available to customers also in the Czech republic, is fermented in stainless steel barrels, before maturing in oak barrel for approximately 20 to 24 months, which would qualify it to be a reserva, if the Aalto would not prefer to identify the wine simply by its  appelation like the famous French chateaux do. Aalto produces about 200.000 bottles of wine per year, including the very exclusive Pagos Seleccionados (PS), maturing up to 36 months in oak barrels followed by another three months on bottle. Aalto PS is one of the most exquisite wines of Spain and is produced only in the best of years from the very rigorously selected grapes. Drinking this wine is an unforgettable experience indeed!

Winemaking

Harvested grapes are collected into plastic boxes, which are immediately transported to the winery, where they are carefully sorted on conveyor belt into several classes according to their quality. After destemming follows fermantation in custom-made cone-shaped stainless-steel barrels. A part of the grapes undergo maloactic fermentation in American oak barrels, before all wine is moved into French oak barrels for 20 to 24 months long fermentation. The harvest from each individual vineyard is separated and the ratio of these wines in the final mixture is decided by Mariano only shortly prior to bottling the wines. The wine is not filtered after fermentation.

Inside information

Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos, although a young winery, its wine producing methods are considerably traditional. Grapes are harvested entirely manually and principles of organic wine growing are rigorously applied. The winery, named after the famous Finish architect Alvar Aalto, lies in the heart of the Ribera del Duero region, approximately 250 km north of Madrid with vineyards spread out over the hillsides providing the backdrop to seven villages surrounding Quintanilla de Arriba, where the Aalto Bodegas owners built huge winery complex on a plot spreading out across 15 hectares.
