History

In an endeavour to establish Christianity in Castile during the Reconquest, the Count of Castile commissioned the construction of a series of convent-fortresses. As a result, in 1146, the Premonstratensian order built the monastery of Santa María de Retuerta in a beautiful enclave on the banks of the Duero River.

The monks of the order of Saint Norbert were given terras et vineas (land and vines) in Duero Valley and the second abbot brought the first French grape varieties from Burgundy that were planted in this famour Spain wine region. Since then, the land of our estate has been dedicated to the vine, to silence and to devotion.

Vineyards

The vineyards extend along the North-facing slopes, climbing from the river bank to heights of up to 850 metres. This difference in altitude, together with the different soil types, creates variations in the yield from each vineyard and, therefore, grapes with very different characteristics.

Working with vines that are now more than twenty years old, we have gradually brought our wines to maturity. During this time we have grown to know each of the vineyards of the estate in detail, studied their characteristics, and planted the grape varieties best suited to each soil type.

Winemaking

Each bunch of grapes from our Pagos is hand-picked individually attending to our strict maturation controls. We were the first in the region to use sorting tables, enabling us to select the best grapes for our wines. We ferment our wines in small stainless steel tanks, which enable us to make separately, the wines produced from the grapes of different plots. Our Pago wines. Our advanced quality control and analysis centre helps us to reach the very highest standards and consistent levels of quality even on the complicated vintages to prepare top quality wine in Spain.

Inside information

Since its inception, the world renowned oenologist Pascal Delbeck has been in charge of the technical project for Abadía Retuerta, which, to use his own words is “the rebirth of a historic vineyard and the creation of a unique wine”. He is a firm believer that the vine should not be forced and that time and knowledge alone should be allowed to get the most out of the grape.

We have to add to this, the wisdom and fine nose of our oenologist Ángel Anocíbar, this combination resulting in exceptional wines, that never disappoint and that are conceived with greatness in mind.
