History

The Family Clouet have been living in and around the grand cru village of Bouzy, in the Montagne de Reims vineyards since 1492. The Montagne, the highest point between Germany and the UK if you look down a straight line, has been fought over for centuries - Attila the Hun camped on it in 451 AD, but it is the Pinot Noir grape which is now the King of this particular hill! The soil is volcanic schist over a chalk base, and the vines work hard giving quality and concentration to the wines. Jean-François Clouet is an ebullient character, larger than life, who believes passionately in himself. His goal is to turn Pinot Noir (and he only uses Pinot Noir) into the best grower’s champagne on the market. By appointment to, and on first names with the Royal Family of Sweden, he regularly welcomes dignitaries and pop stars from all over the world, many of whom now arrive by helicopter to collect a case or two of his fabulous wines.

Vineyards

Their 9 hectares are located on well placed middle slopes in these two famous towns. Their flagship, the famous Cuvée 1911 is still stocked at the bar in the Folies Bergère, Paris. The 1911 is quite sumptuous, normally from 2 consecutave vintages, it is always vivid and fine as a aperitif as well steamed lobster and salmon en croûte. Jean-François is a savvy, shrewd business person, as well as craftsperson of fine Champagnes. He holds true to the techniques handed down by his family, but with an eye towards competing with larger houses, he redesigned the labels. The evocative ancient régime label is an homage to his printer ancestor. Since he has taken charge, the family’s wines have achieved cult status and have been favorable compared to those of Jacques Selosse, an iconic Champagne producer. Jean-François, however, prefers to emulate Bollinger, one of the grand houses in Champagne, known for their full-bodied wines. All of Clouet’s vintage wines come from a vineyard of old vines situated next to Bollinger’s ungrafted vines in Bouzy.

Winemaking

Severe pruning, a slight subscriber provides minerals and some treatments make moderate yields short. The harvest is manual and takes a large selection of clusters to remove those who have not aged well. The winemaking is done in a traditional winery, almost archaic.A former high vertical press gets fine and balanced musts. The must go to small tubs where they conduct the alcoholic fermentation between 16 º C and 18 º C, and malolactic to 18 º C. The wine is aged in the cellars of the family to 10 feet deep, with disgorgement removed and manuals.
