History

Antucura means “Sun Stone” in Mapudungun, the Mapuche language that was spoken by the inhabitants of the Valle de Uco, a region located in the centre-west of Mendoza city and comprised by the states of Tunuyán, Tupungato and San Carlos. Vista Flores is located in the Valle de Uco and is considered one of the most important wine areas of Argentina.

It is a beautiful place, located at the foot hills of the Andes Mountains, where our vineyards find unbeatable temperature and soils to produce exceptional quality grapes most every year. With work and passion renew the bond with this land where nature and culture flower simultaneously giving rise to identity Argentina, attribute present in each fruit of our vineyards and in every glass of our wines.

Vineyards

Our vineyards are planted at 1,050 meters in the Vista Flores district of Valle de Uco. The land is characterized by the abundant of boulders, and glacial stones which were transported from high in the Andes in pre-historic times. The climate has huge temperature swing between day and night. It is here that the succession of cool nights and sunny days favors a long ripening season which intensifies the color, fruit and a natural acidity in the grapes.

Our varieties of Malbec, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot were all clones imported from Bordeaux. The conditions are unbeatable with our density of 5,500 plants per hectare. More recently we planted Pinot Noir and Syrah each showing good results. At Antucura, we work responsibly with the land. Everything we do protects the native flora and fauna to the maximum of our ability. We are respectful of the land and the environment in which we live.

Winemaking

The oenological criterion of Antucura seeks to achieve wines whose expression faithfully represents the terroir of Vista Flores. The conservation of the soil focuses on using native materials. The elaboration process begins with a double manual selection of clusters and berries and only using fruit of the highest quality in all our wines. Once the grapes are crushed they flow by gravity into stainless steel tanks for fermentation.

To promote the concentration of fruit aromas, we believe in a cold maceration prior to fermentation. The fermentation is done with native yeasts and long incubation periods that often exceed 45 days. Aging is carried out in French oak barrels and depends on the blend or variety and its expression of style or character.

In November 2011, French oenologist Hervè Chagneau became a part of our team -He has worked extensively in the regions of Pomerol and Saint-Emilon, France for several years and then he specialized at a Cuyo region winery called Bodega Poesía- who is responsible for the blends that give genuine life and identity to our wines.

Inside information

Our dream began in 1993 as a publishing project with the mission to tell the story of Mendoza through the eyes and soul of its first inhabitants to those whose vision is only limited by the soaring mountain peaks and fertile river valley. A few years later our enterprise took roots with the acquisition of 130 acres of land at the foot hills of the imposing Cordillera de los Andes in Vista Flores, in the region of Valle de Uco – Mendoza. We began planting with Bordeaux varietals to produce something exceptional when the time was right. At this site we constructed a small hotel of exquisite elegance and refined details that offer an intimate stay.

In 2003, the first vintage of our Antucura was born - a blend of Bordeaux varietals crafted by a passionate team to produce a unique blend of wine from our own terroir. We work with passion in the vineyards and continue to identify special sites where these mountain soils, clear skies and endless sun give hope that our Argentine identity will be discovered in each glass of wine, every page of our books and the hospitality of our hotel.
