History

Barkan winery was born at the end of the 19th century. Its current incarnation is a wine paradise. So how did we do that? It was actually simple. From the very first days of our existence, we have concentrated our attention on one thing only: grapes’ quality. The top-grade breeds were brought from all over the world and put in Barkan vineyards in Israel. Nowadays, there are dozens of breeds occupying a grand total of over 10 square kilometers of vineyards in winery’s possession, while every breed is grown in an area suitable for it.

In 2000, a new sophisticated winery was established at Hulda kibbutz located in the Judean plain. The winery was designed with 21st century in mind. It boasts the most advanced production technologies in the world. The winery includes laboratories, farms, the packaging center, and the marketing & logistics center. Thanks to the enormous assortment of wine breeds and growth areas, the advanced fermentation methods, as well as over 5,000 natural oak barrels, Barkan winery is a real wine paradise.

Barkan winemakers have gained world-wide renown and won prestigious awards due to the exceptional wine quality and the brave grape breed combinations. You are invited to taste our wine yourselves. Feel the power behind every drop. Cheers!

Jerusalem Mountains

High area, cool and dry - a mountain range abounds with limestone soil, where water percolation roots is good. Dry air helps prevent damage from pests and diseases to grape vines. The ramps help flow and percolation of water, good sun exposure also helps ripening of aromas and phenols.

Altitude: 620m - 800m.

Size: 600 Acres.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, Pinot Noir, White - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

Yehuda Plains

Although it is one of the hottest growth areas, there is still "a temperature fall" between day and night, allowing good ripening. Lots of sun and high temperatures allow a lot of fruit aromas in grapes

Altitude: 100m - 200m.

Size: 4000 Acres.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Krinain, Argaman. White - Chardonnay, Emerald Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc..

Tel-Tzapit

Lachish area is historical known for planting vineyards dating back to our ancestors. Hot area with hills and valleys and limestone soil that consists of sediment. Differences between day and night temperatures and dry weather help protect the vine, making the optimal area for trials of new varieties parallel regions in the world.

Size: 800 Acres.

Altitude: 200m - 300m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinotage, Caladoc, Marselan, Carignan, Argaman, Shiraz. White - Sauvignon Blanc.

Negev Vineyard

One of the advantages of this region is its sheer size. There is a lot of free soil here, so using the correct cultivation method, we have a chance not only to produce some good wine, but also to fertilize the desert. Additionally, due to extreme conditions, the harvests are relatively low, and thus, no cutting-back needs to be done - the grapes are naturally more concentrated.

Size: 400 Acres.

Altitude: 550m - 800m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Pinot Noir.

Upper Galilee Alma Vineyard

It is a mountainous area, quite slanted and elevated. It is widely considered one of the coldest regions in Israel, but also one of the most diverse ones. Different slopes and various kinds of soil create a variegated micro-climate, allowing for different grape breeds to be cultivated here successfully.

Size: 800 Acres.

Altitude: 620m. - 750m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot.

Upper Galilee Dalton Vineyard

An elevated plateau. The climate ranges from fresh to cold during the year. This region is especially well-suited for Bordolaise classic breeds, as well as for the aromatic breeds.

Size: 200 Acres.

Altitude: 750m - 800m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pino Noir, Shiraz. White - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

Dovev Vineyard

A rocky area. Chalky soil with minor inclusions of terra rossa at considerable heights. Chilly all year long. Temperature drop between day and night-time is prominent. It is considered a tough area for grape cultivation. The harvests are usually scarce.

Size: 250 Acres.

Altitude: 720m - 750m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Argaman, Shiraz. White - Sauvignon Blanc.

Kadesh Valey Vineyard

This valley includes several terroirs, from the chilly highland areas to the especially minerally fertile lowlands.

Size: 300 Acres.

Altitude: 420m - 600m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dishon Vineyard

An elevated, chilly, and dry area. This region is slanted, with chalky soil. Due to the soil qualities, the water can nurture the roots very well. A dry climate helps in preventing wine & grape illness and protects them from vermin. The slopes assist in roots nurturing, as well as in making the wine exposed to the sun. This region is well-suited for cultivating aromatic breeds.

Size: 400 Acres.

Altitude: 420m - 600m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, Shiraz.

Reihan Mountain Vineyard

A rocky mountaintop. Therefore, despite the high enough precipitation, this area is paradoxically dry. In addition, low temperature and high degree of sun exposure on the slopes make the production of cold herbal compounds possible.

Size: 200 Acres.

Altitude: 680m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Marselan, Pinot Noir. White - Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc.

Miron Vineyard

An area located on the steep eastern slope. Chalky soil. The eastern slope makes the morning sun exposure prominent, which helps the grapes to acquire the aromatic qualities without the undesirable side effect of burning.

Size: 150 Acres.

Altitude: 700m.

Grape Strains: Red - Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz.

Winemaking

The Barkan Winery has a wide range of varietal wines and blends, which all have one thing in common – they all have a story to tell. Whether it’s the Assemblage series that tells the story about the different wine-producing areas of Israel, or the Altitude Series that tells the story about how a single grape seed can produce completely different wines, when it is grown at different altitudes. The Barkan Winery team is very proud to tell each of these stories through our wines.
