History

A dream come true, Barón De Ley is a winery which was devised and founded in 1985 by a small group of prestigious Rioja professionals which decided to create a project which was unique at that time in the Denominación de Origen Calificada Rioja: a winery modelled on the Médoc châteaux, bringing together all the conditions that make a wine a work of art. With this objective, the creators of Barón De Ley acquired the Imas estate, within the boundaries of Mendavia and on the left bank of the River Ebro. It is an exceptional place for growing vines due to its climatic conditions and the characteristics of its soils, on which 90 hectares of vines were planted.

Vineyards

Ever since the creation of Barón de Ley in 1985, the vineyards have played a vital role in the project. The idea of producing an “estate wine”, a wine in which the enologist merely interprets the unique character of each vintage, meant first finding a vineyard capable of expressing all the qualities of our land. Already, back in the 16th century, Benedictine monks originating from the Monastery of Irache, who tended the vines in these plots, realised the ideal conditions for growing grapes of excellent quality which were to be found on the Imas estate.

Winemaking

In the last few years, the panorama of Spanish wines has experimented a grat dynamism with the appearance of new concepts of wines called "de alta expresión", "de autor", " de pago".... as an answer to the new quality trend of the various markets. This new scenario also arose a process of research at Baron de Ley, that we have been modelling and perfectioning until the arrival of its first fruit: our Finca Monasterio. Trying to avoid clichés, Finca Monasterio is a wine really made at the vineyard; a wine where the winemaker proves his humility leaving the lead to the very soul of the wine: the grape.
