History

In 1883, Federico Benegas Lynch’s great grandfather founded “El Trapiche” winery. On that time, the province of Mendoza was facing an economic crisis due to the fact that wheat and alfalfa, that used to be source of income for this province, were already planted in other regions of the country. At the end of the 19th century there were between 500 and 2000 hectares of vines planted in Mendoza. Don Tiburcio Benegas had the vision of making of Mendoza a great producer of high quality wine for the world. He was not focused only in his personal project but encouraged other producers to apply modern techniques and he gave part the vines he brought from France to every viticulture who wanted to grow in the province. In this way Don Tiburcio became, together with Agoston Haraszthy in Carlifornia and Silvestre Ochagavia in Chile, pioneer of the wine industry of America.

In the 1970’s Argentina wine industry suffered a big economic crisis and on that time, the shareholders of the company Benegas Hnos., decided to sell everything by separate, the brand, the vineyards and the winery that was demolished and divided in lots for sale. Federico was raised in the winery always close to his father who used to be winemaker in Trapiche. After the company was dissolved he moved to Buenos Aires, but his passion for Mendoza and for winemaking remained in his heart and it was in 1999 that he had the opportunity to re buy Finca Libertad, an old vineyard that was planted by Don Tiburcio and that became the axis for his new project that was to produce only high end wines, the Benegas wines. Two years later he bought a very antique winery which he restored completely following the architecture of 19th Century and incorporating the latest technology. In the year 2000 started the first harvest of Benegas wines.

Vineyards

The Province of Mendoza is located in the Center West of Argentina, bordering with Chile, at the foothill of the Andes Range and produces around 70% of the Argentine wines. During the past two decades, thanks to investments in plantings and technology, this region has been greatly developed. In a desertic climate, with an annual average rainfall of 250 mm, irrigation is a key factor. The departments of Lujan de Cuyo and Maipu, where the Benegas winery and Finca Libertad are located, are included in the “First Zone”, traditionally well known for the best quality wines of Argentina.

Finca La Encerrada at 1500 mt above sea level, bought by Bodega Benegas some years ago, is located in Uco Valley, a very well developed zone with vineyards between 1000 and 1600 mts (3300 to 5250 ft) above sea level. Situated in Gualtallary, District in the Tupungato Department, one of the two top micro regions of Malbec in Mendoza. Thanks to the climate and soil conditions, excellent wines are produced of intense colours, very fresh with abundant flowers and fruit, good structure and elegance.

Winemaking

For the production of our wines Benegas Lynch and Benegas Estate we use 100% own grapes from our vineyards Finca Libertad and La Encerrada. In this way we are able to maintain our own style and homogeneity, through the knowledge of our terroir and a very strict quality control. The Grapes are manually harvested in small plastic boxes of 20 kg. Federico and his team do the sensorial taste of the grapes and seeds of every variety before deciding the picking time. When the grapes arrive to the winery the temperature is checked and if necessary the boxes are kept in a temperature controlled area before they are sent to the manual selection table where leaves and rotten berries are discarded.

After passing the two selection tables, the berries are transferred directly to the concrete tanks where they will start their fermentation and maceration processes. Firstly a cold maceration is done in order to potentiate the primary aromas of the grapes. Before starting the alcoholic fermentation, the temperature is raised to an average of 24° C / 75° F and selected yeasts are added. After this, the traditional maceration is done for 2 to 4 weeks, depending of the type of wine we are producing.

Inside information

The style of the Benegas wines is mainly complexity and elegance, allowing the terroir to express and priorizing the fruit more than the oak in each of them. The balanced acidity is remarkable giving as a result friendly and balanced wines. The French oak ageing and the long bottle ageing grant ripen sweet and round tannins, this is stable in all the production and guarantees long life to the wines.
