History

The Romero Marcuzzi family took its first steps in the wine world when Roberto Romero started his first winery four decades ago in Tolombón, a few kilometers from Cafayate. There, among the vineyards and long family summers, began the development of the pillars of the current project: a strong commitment to the site, the highest dedication to the work and a great love and respect for the terroir that has grown through the years. It was in that first winery that Lucía, grand daughter of Roberto Romero and today Director of El Porvenir de Cafayate, took her first steps.

In the year 2000 we decided to create a new project with a more exclusive target market, designing a premium winery with small batches of very high quality wine, limiting our production to a maximum of  200,000 bottles per year. With this clear objective, we acquired an old winery that we brought up to date with investments in infrastructure and technology, at the same time successfully restoring the 50 year-old Torrontés and Tannat vineyards. During that period we also planted Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah vines (among other varietals) in a new vineyard.

Today, the winery based in Cafayate is managed by Lucía Romero- Marcuzzi, who works with a distinguished team of 50 people following the legacy of their ancestors with a remarkable innovative spirit. We are working to proudly show Argentina and the world the footprint of Cafayate in each of our wines.

Vineyards

We tend to our vines at an altitude of 1,750 meters above sea level in a unique and privileged region. In the province of Salta, Argentina, 180 km south of the capital, lies this region with an extreme desert climate, offering warm days and cool nights, very little rainfall and plentiful sunlight, with vineyards planted between 1,700 and 2,500 meters above sea level.

Cafayate is a small, isolated valley with very special characteristics—its desert climate and poor soils benefit the production of high quality grapes, making it easy to practice integrated, sustainable and organic viticulture. The principal factor influencing the vines is the day-night temperature variation, due to the altitude, which allows the grapes to become very concentrated and at the same time very ripe, resulting in wines with smooth, round tannins. Cafayate gives us this unique terroir, and we contribute the most important thing: family.

Faithful to our vision of sustainably cultivating vines of exceptional quality, we decided to sustainably farm and care for our vineyards. Conscious of our responsibility to future generations, we maintain and constantly seek to improve the available resources through sustainable practices, in harmony with the ecology and the culture of the site. We have four vineyards: El Retiro, Río Seco, Alto Los Cardones and Alto Los Cuises.
