Our vineyards at San Juan have seen over 145 years of Graffigna's winemaking history, producing their finest grapes to bottle Argentina's heritage and passion.

1870 - SAN JUAN'S FIRST VINEYARD IS FOUNDED UNDER THE NAME OF NONE OTHER THAN SANTIAGO GRAFFIGNA.

1885 - Santiago leads the railway expansion to reach new consumers. The winery becomes one of the first in Argentina to sell branded wine.

1895 - This year is marked by the return to Argentina of Santiago's son, Juan. He brings new ideas from Italy, such as the use of cold in the vinification, new strains of grapes, the installation of the first compressors and bigger tanks. Graffigna stands out at that time for being one of the most innovative wineries in the country.

1923 - GRAFFIGNA BREAKS NEW GROUND REGARDING THE WINERMAKING PROCESS, AS SANTIAGO AND JUAN BUILD A NATURAL SLOPE SYSTEM IMPLEMENTING FORCE OF GRAVITY TO HANDLE GRAPES. THE WINERY STARTS TO BOTTLE ITS PRODUCT, WHICH NOW HAS A VAST VARIETAL COLLECTION.

More than 800 varieties of grapes are imported from different countries in Europe in order to be studied, resulting in the most complete ampelographic collection in Argentina.

1935 - The winery is one of the first ones to use cold in the vinification process and the use of liquid and dosable sulfur dioxide. Plus, they install the first colanders, which allow the elaboration of white wine made from colored grapes.

1970 - THE WINERY'S 100 BIRTHDAY IS CELEBRATED WITH THE CREATION OF THE GRAND RESERVE LINE, DESIGNED TO HONOUR THE LEGACY OF THE FOUNDER AND CREATOR, SANTIAGO GRAFFIGNA.

2009 - Graffigna is named “Winery of the Year” in the U.S. by the Critics Challenge, and Graffigna Centenario becomes the most awared Malbec of 2007-2008.

Graffigna wines are included in the Pernod Ricard portfolio.

2010 - Graffigna Centenario and Grand Reserve Malbec are awarded 90 points by the world renowned oenologist, Robert Parker.

2013 - Graffinga partners with Riedel to create their first Malbec glass.

Grape varieties have different behaviours at different altitudes. The choice to use multi altitude terroirs comes from the decision to achieve wines with great complexity and distinctive grape expression. The expression and richness of each grape varies mainly due to the characteristics of the regions and altitude in which the vineyards are situated. The higher their elevation, the lower the temperature and the wider the thermal amplitude between day and night. Depending on how high —or how low— the vineyards are placed, grapes develop differently in colour, aroma and texture. The berries are also affected by sunlight intensity and soil characteristics, which also depend on the altitude of the terroir.

The different altitude vineyards produce various strains of grapes that can be combined with each other accordingly. The unique microclimates favour the production of a vast collection of varietals, while grapes achieve optimal ripeness and thrive corresponding to the singularities of each of the terroirs. The combination of these various factors, together with the Pasión of our winemakers, make our bold and distinctive wines.
