Doug Bowen, Coonawarra Vigneron awarded Patron of Coonawarra

Recently Coonawarra vigneron Doug Bowen was awarded the honour of "Coonawarra Patron" in recognition of his outstanding personal and professional contributions to the development and promotion of the Coonawarra wine region.

Fellow Coonawarra winemaker, Greg Clayfield, presented the award to Doug, noting that he has "..a passion for quintessential Coonawarra and has always been a supporter and ambassador for the region." Doug was a founding member of the Coonawarra Vigneron's Association in 1983, going on to serve as treasurer for most of the years between 1986 and 2005 and as president in 1990 and 1991.

Doug and co-founder of Hollick Estate, Wendy Hollick, who was also made a Patron of Coonawarra on the day, join existing Patron – Doug Balnaves (Balnaves of Coonawarra).

Doug Bowen's commitment to the region since establishing the family owned and operated winery Bowen Estate in 1972 exemplifies the innovative vineyard management techniques he has established and which are a hallmark of the Bowen Estate wine experience and its wines.

Vineyards

Bowen Estate vineyards occupy 33 hectares of prime terra rossa soil. Planted primarily to Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Chardonnay. Since the purchase in 1972 of our first block of land, hand pruning has always been part of Bowen Estate’s uniqueness. Our arch cane trellis system introduced in 1989 has been integral to our style of wine.

Winemaking

Much of our philosophy for the style of wine that we like to produce begins with the vineyard. Firstly, the location of our vineyard is on the traditional prime terra rossa soil of Coonawarra. This is of the utmost importance to us. Secondly, we have a very strong belief in the traditional hand pruning of our vines, combined with an arch cane trellis system. This improves the evenness of budburst, bunch exposure and ripeness, but more importantly, this method of pruning ensures that we have a balanced vine. Therefore the vine will produce fruit of optimum quality. It is this optimum fruit that makes our bench mark wines which reflect the true characteristics of Coonawarra - strong varietal aromas, big flavours and soft balanced tannins
