History

Castelli del Grevepesa, a Wine Co-operative, was established in 1965 by a small group of eighteen winegrowers in Tuscany on the initiative of Mr. Gualtiero Armando Nunzi. Their intention was to bring together a group of people from different areas of the Chianti Classico region whose common purpose was to preserve the centuries old traditions of the Tuscan viticulture. Since its foundation Castelli del Grevepesa has concentrated on producing high quality wines by carefully selecting the grapes and by complying with the strict regulations of the Law and the Consorzio “Gallo Nero”  (Black Rooster).

Vineyards

From the wide expansion of the vineyards planted and cultivated by the members themselves on the hills of the Chianti Classicoregion and after years of experience within these territories, small areas or even single vineyards have been identified where the grapes with superior qualitative characteristics can be cultivated. Among these areas the most renowned are: Panzano, a  fortified medieval village built in the vicinity of our Etruscan and later Roman settlement;  Lamole, a small village high up on  the South-East Hills of Greve in Chianti and Castle of Bibbione, ancient Manor, which was property of Niccolò Machiavelli.

Winemaking

To safeguard the value of the agricultural Territories of Tuscany and to produce Excellent Wines at reasonable fares.

During the vegetative period and the harvest, our Agronomist team scrupulously follow the members’ vineyards checking the status of these, in accordance with the weather conditions . After the Members transfer their total yield to the Winery Castelli del Grevepesa, the grapes are controlled in the Co-operative’s own  laboratory  from their arrival, up to the bottling phase. These controls are carried out by the cellar men under the direction of the enologist, Stefano Mosele, who together with some other Enologists, have the important task to oversee the whole vinification process. They have to pay attention to the particular types of grapes, their varieties and their characteristics and especially to the alcoholic fermentation, the racking, the control of malolactic fermentation and the following decanting, refinement and aging phase in casks and barrique (French barrels). All operations that are carried out, from the vineyards, up to bottling process, takes place under the supervision of the  General Manager, the agronomist and enologist Ugo Pagliai.
