History

Château d’Issan is reported to have been served at the marriage of Eleanor d’Aquitane and Henry Plantagenet during the Middle Ages. There are records of Château d’Issan kept in the cellars of The Prince of Wales during the 18th Century, and in the late 19th Century the Emperor Franz-Joseph of Austria thought so highly of this wine that he regularly served it at court. The Château’s motto is “For the Tables of Kings and the Altars of Gods” – if you are looking for a claret with pedigree, you can't go far wrong with this timeless classic.

Although over the previous centuries Château d`Issan was highly renowned, at the beginning of the 20th century the estate fell into a period of nelgect until the Cruse family took over in 1945. Currently owned and run by Emmanuel Cruse, his wife, and their son, Lionel, d'Issan have restored this once great Château to its previous glory, now with 52 hectares of vineyards planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%) and Merlot (30%).

Vineyards

This 32 hectare property is situated on the ancient road between Cantenac and Margaux itself. The lovely chateau is surrounded by and old stone wall, which contains soil unique in Margaux and as a result the wines are atypical for the appellation, being more tannic and full bodied than usual. The grapes are all hand picked and then carefully sorted before crushing. A very strict selection is made before blending and the wine is traditionally aged in oak barrels before bottling.

Winemaking

Blending is a complex process in which the finest wines from the best vineyard plots are combined. Cabernet Sauvignon is always the predominant grape variety, with a smaller amount of Merlot. The proportion varies from year to year, depending on which plots produced the best wines. Blending usually takes place between the end of January and early February. Jacques Boissenot has been the estate’s consulting oenologist since 1995. The wine is aged for two years in barrels, and bottled in spring of the second year.
