History

The birth of Domaine Albert Mann is the fruit of the joint efforts of two big winemaker families, Mann and Barthelmé. Mann's are winegrowers since the beginning of the 17th century and Barthelmé's since 1654. Today both brothers, Maurice and Jacky Barthelmé, with theirs wives, Marie-Claire and Marie-Thérèse, manage the family estate.

Vineyards

Currently, the Domaine Albert Mann exploits 21 hectares of vines, are split into a hundred or so plots, which are tended like individual gardens with patience and a total respect for the benefits that nature brings them. We work 5 Grands Crus, 2 Field names and 1 Clos in monopole.

Winemaking

The goal of the estate is to produce wine that is in harmony with nature. Wine is the memory of the grape and is capable of transmitting the taste of the earth. Since 2000, the estate's wine have been organically certified by Ecocert. We began practising biodynamic viticulture in 1997 in three Grands Crus vineyards. Over the following years, we applied biodynamics across the entirety of our estate and since 2010, we have been in the process of receiving biodynamic certification from Biodyvin.

The viticultural practice is labour intensive and more costly but it gives the wine the purest reflection of its terroir and its own identity. In plowing the vineyards, we manage to make the roots go down to a maximum depth to capture the minerals of the rock degradation.

Inside information

Since the vintage 2004, we use screw caps on our "Tradition" wines and on some wines of the range "Vins de terroir". The wines bottled with this method are fruity ones that should be drunken within 4-6 years. "The evolution of a wine doesn't require oxygen. The wine develops its organoleptic capacities in a reductive environment where it acquires superior properties of quality." That comment from Pascal Ribéreau Gayon (treatise of oenology, 2000) should disrupt stereotyped speeches that make the oxygen the only element for the improvement of the wine.
