History

We all have the family we share blood with and then we have the families we share passions with. Often, like in our family, you share both. In our family this passion is making great wine. It began when prohibition ended. Ernest & Julio Gallo were traveling the country selling grapes from the family vineyard. What they really wanted to do, however, was start a winery. They borrowed $5,000 from Ernest’s mother-in-law, taught themselves how to make wine by reading books in the local Modesto library and their dream was born.

A lot’s happened in the last 80 years and we’ve learned plenty along the way. Not only about making great wine, but also about what it means to be a family. While many traditions change, our family’s tradition has not and Gallo Family Vineyards is proud to still be family owned. Today, our family has expanded to include four generations of Gallos, as well as a Winery of employees that are now family too. Whether it’s your family at work, the friends you consider family or the crazy characters you’re related to, we know how special it is to spend time together, enjoying each other and what ties you together. However you define your family, we have great tasting, flavorful wines for you to enjoy with them.

We’re proud of our tradition of making great wine. But most of all, we’re honored to be invited to wherever your family gets together.

Vineyards

It's no secret that healthy vines grow the best grapes, and ultimately make the best-tasting wines. Our vineyards provide diverse soils and growing conditions, including cool coastal climates along the rugged Central Coast; the unique combination of warm days and cool nights found in Sonoma and Napa Counties; and the hot, dry summers and cool, damp winters of the Central Valley. At E. & J. Gallo Winery, our talented vineyard teams maximize winegrape quality while minimizing the impact on the soil and surrounding environment. They nurture and maintain the vineyards with knowledge, instinct and skill, turning what nature provides into a bountiful harvest of the finest quality winegrapes.

Winemaking

While it’s true that great wines are made in the vineyard, it takes a skilled and discerning winemaker to recognize the value of the fruit and craft it into a great wine. At E. & J. Gallo Winery, we’re proud to have world-class winemakers around the globe, who learn from one another and artfully create award-winning wines recognized by critics and consumers alike for their quality and value. Whether you want wine for a backyard barbecue or as a gift for a friend’s wine cellar, our winemakers strive to ensure that our wines will enrich any occasion.

At E. & J. Gallo Winery, our passion for quality never stops. Although the art of making wine is more than 5,000 years old, we always ask questions and apply what we learn so we can improve the evolution of wine from the vine to the bottle – and ultimately to your glass.
