History

Champagne Henri GOUTORBE is a family-owned champagne house, situated in the renowned Grand Cru village of Aÿ, in the heart of the Champagne region, 3 km from Epernay. The creation of the champagne range followed the development of the vine nursery, a family tradition born in the beginning of the 20th century and which represents the first stage of the production of champagne wines. Emile Goutorbe was already a nurseryman when his son Henri was born in Aÿ in 1922.

Since the 1970s, René GOUTORBE has continued developing the vineyards and has been in charge of producing the cuvees. His children Elisabeth, Bertrand and Etienne share his passion and are involved in building the reputation of our wine and of our region.

The quality of the grapes, which are harvested manually, is a result of the careful selection of the best vines, based on their genetic features and on the specificities of each plot. After pressing the grapes slowly and adapting the vinifcation in stainless steel vats to each plot’s particular features, the blend is followed by a second fermentation in the bottles. Our champagnes are aged on lees in the bottles for at least three years in our historic cellars.

You will enjoy the warm hospitality offered by Nicole, René’s wife, and their children.

In line with Henri’s vision (1922-2009), the Goutorbe family continues producing champagne wines from its own vineyards.

René the efficient: a nickname given to him during a trip.

Nicole, the inspirer, who will welcome you both at the champagne house and at hôtel*** Castel Jeanson

And their children:

  • Elisabeth, the independent businesswoman, who founded champagne Egrot & filles with her husband
  • Bertrand, the observer of life who is always ready to help
  • Etienne, the renewal set in motion, who shapes the vineyards of the family

Vineyards

An own vine nursery

In order to replant their vineyards destroyed by the phylloxera pest in the end of the 19th century, winegrowers started grafting their grape varieties (pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay) on pest resistant rootstocks.

Emile Goutorbe (1890-1956) dedicated his whole life to the vine nursery, like his son Henri (1922-2009) who knew how to share and transmit his passion to René (born in 1953) and Etienne (born in 1985).
