History

Hewitson was founded in 1998. From his extensive travels and vast experience of working and traveling the world of wine, owner and wine maker Dean Hewitson came to the realization that South Australia's strength lays in its very old vineyards, many of them dry-grown from the 19th Century and therefore the oldest of their type in the world.

It is no coincidence that these vineyards are in the vicinity of Dean's birth place. They are the in regions of Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills - all famous in their own right and help make up the greater region, The Adelaide Super Zone.
For its first decade, Hewitson operated out of the Old Dairy Cold Store on the edge of Adelaide's CBD where all the milk for the City of Adelaide was delivered and distributed. Built in the late 1800s with thick, cork-lined walls and a naturally cool environment, the Old Dairy was a home to cellar and mature Hewitson's fine wine.

By 2007, Dean realized the business had outgrown this wonderful old building. Understanding progress, he and his wife Lou acquired 17 acres of prime vineyard at Dorrien alongside The Para River in the heart of the Barossa Valley. A new winery was purpose-built from the ground up ready to take the 2008 vintage. This has become Hewitson's new home.

Vineyards

Hewitson makes its home among some of the oldest vineyards in the world. Discovering the beauty within these venerable old vines and expressing their distinctive characters through winemaking that respects tradition and understands progress is the essence of Hewitson.

We are dedicated to producing traditionally-made, expressive wines from the great vineyards of South Australia's famous wine regions: Adelaide Hills, Eden Valley, McLaren Vale, Barossa Valley and stretching to the tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Geographically these regions are collectively known as The Adelaide Super Zone. This is Hewitson's backyard.

One of Hewitson's most famous vineyards locate in Barossa. At Rowland Flat there is a vineyard that has eight rows of an extremely old Mourvedre vines dating back over 160 years. This piece of land used to be a bottom of an ancient lake. Dean Hewitson makes some of his most fascinating wines called Old Garden Mourvedre from these vines. "The roots of these vines are so deep (10 metres down into prehistoric ground) that even on the hottest day, while every other vine in the Barossa Valley has shut down, the Old Garden’s leaves are bright and perky, tracking the sun as if each leaf is a radar," Dean says.

Winemaking

Dean Hewitson, Chief Wine Maker and CEO

Dean completed his wine making degree at Roseworthy College, South Australia, in 1986. After vintages in Western Australia and the Hunter Valley, Dean worked at one of Australia's most prestigious wineries in South Australia from 1987 to 1997. During this decade Dean achieved numerous vintages overseas in Beaujolais, Provence, Bordeaux and Oregon. He also completed his Master of Food Science in Enology at University of California, Davis, from 1990 to 1992. Dean founded Hewitson in 1998 with his wife Lou and is the Chief Executive and Chief Winemaker.

Lou Hewitson, International Brand Manager

Since 1988 Lou has owned and managed a successful fashion business and in 1998 founded Hewitson with her husband Dean. Lou plays a crucial role in the branding and marketing of Hewitson. Paying tribute to Lou's support Dean has named LuLu Sauvignon Blanc in her honour.

James Adams, Winemaking Team

James is a 4th generation winemaker, brought up in a Barossa winemaking family which dates back to 1919. With such a rich heritage of winemaking in his blood, it was no surprise James found a passion in wine. So in 2006, James commenced his Winemaking studies at the Adelaide University, graduating in 2009. He has gained valuable experience working in many notable producers within the Barossa since 2003. In 2012, James joined the Hewitson team as Winemaker, bringing along experience and enthusiasm to make great wine.

It is true we do make wine in the ‘new world’ but we have the oldest vineyards in the world – it’s kind of an oxymoron if you like. The fact that the Barossa Valley has the oldest Shiraz, Cabernet, Mourvedre, Grenache, Semillon and Riesling vineyards in the world means that we are in fact older than the ‘old world’! I think that message is the one that we need to highlight – Australia has the oldest vineyards in the world.
