History

The first plot of Jean-Marc Brocard was a man, Louis Petit, winemaker who teach him the Vine, Wine and Men.

Jean-Marc Brocard still cultivates his science and wisdom: “Look, be quiet and learn.“. The long years of learning, take the same paths of the old winemaker, put his hands on the same branches, watching the same moon, Jean-Marc Brocard has kept patience and respect, the lessons of the soil and subsoil, vines and life.

Louis Petit told him how to talk the terroir. From root to the vine, from the vine to the cluster, from the cluster to the must, and from must to wine, he initiated the slow path of aromas. He told him, man to man, secrets and knowledge that can not be explained but which share in the light of early morning or in the cool shade of a cellar.

With Louis Petit, the wit was grafted to the youth to make sensible the idea of perpetuity, of transmission.

In 1973 Jean-Marc settled in Préhy and built his own cellars in the middle of the vineyards. After years of hard work and many visitors to the Domaine the high quality of Jean-Marc Brocard’s wines is recognised throughout France and the global market.

Nowadays Jean-Marc is gradually handing over the company to his son, Julien, a qualified engineer whose passion for and fresh outlook on the vine and its environment has brought another aspect of vinegrowing to Préhy. An advocate of biodynamic culture, he applies its principles to the soil, the vines and the cellar

We place the vine at the heart of its environment and use preparations made from beneficial plants to stimulate its immune system. The work in the vineyards and in the cellars is carried out according to the lunar cycle.

The principles of biodynamic and organic culture are applied to the majority of our vineyards. We continue our work always with the aim of improving the quality of our products.

As CEO of the company, Julien continues the development of the area while pulsing a corporate culture:

"Do it better, make it better, improve it if it is not broke, because if we do not, we can not compete with those who do"

The ammonite symbol in the company logo refers to life force – the spiral is naturally present in nature symbol of creation and fulfillment, it characterizes our commitment to continuous improvement of our business approach.

Vineyards

Located near Auxerre city, in the valley of the Serein river, Chablis is the centre of one of France's eldest wine-growing regions. 150 million years ago, during the Jurassic era, the sea drew back from the Chablis area. It let a lot of small sea sediments –Exogyra virgula – in the soil called Kimméridgien made up of layers of stones and clay. Thanks to this soil, the roots of the vine will get the specific mineral and salty flavours of Chablis wines. Thanks to eco-friendly methods, Jean-Marc Brocard is still trying to respect this precious terroir in order to make high quality wines.

Since the beginning, Jean-Marc Brocard is committed to a healthier culture, respectful of its environment. In 1997, a plot of 11 hectares of Chablis is conducted in organic and biodynamic.

This first step allows us to observer force and reflection, to better understand this work philosophy. A learning every day for the domaine and its teams.

Today, 60 hectares are certified organic farming and biodynamic 40 hectares.

What makes Domaine Jean-Marc Brocard one of the first wine producers in organic farming in Chablis and Burgundy.

Winemaking

The philosophy in winemaking respects the three signature features: precision, strength and freshness.

The precision refers to the expression of the soil, soil memory conveyed from vine to wine, pure typicity of Chablis basement sedimented by the sea during the Jurassic era.

The strength refers to a structured wine with powerful, long finish, that appreciates the complexity after terroir.

The freshness refers to natural acidity, resulting from the minerality of the soil, giving the wine the tension that goes for signature.
