History

Located within close proximity to the pulsating metropolis of Frankfurt, the town of Wicker welcomes visitors to the Rheingau region. Here, one can visit the Strassenmühle, an acclaimed estate with a noble history spanning over 700 years and where the Joachim Flick Winery currently resides.

The beautifully appointed Strassenmühle estate provides the ideal location to produce superb wines and to experience the wonderful hospitality of the Rheingau region. Thank you for visiting the Joachim Flick Winery website and we look forward to seeing you soon.

The Flick family has been in the agricultural and winemaking industry for many generations. The winery business came in greater focus when Joachim Flick took over the reins in 1973.

The first photo shows Franz-Josef Flick (very right), the grandfather of Reiner Flick. The following images display a grape harvest in Nonnberg and a Nonnberg Riesling wine label dating back to 1929. The last photo in the series gives an impression of how the Strassenmühle estate previously appeared prior to its purchase by Reiner Flick in 1994.

To encounter wine is a timeless and delightful experience. One can discover and appreciate the wonderful world of wines by taking part in our comprehensive range of events held at the winery, in addition to enjoying our assortment of goods sold at the wine store.

Vineyards

Great wines are defined by their origins. The vineyard is the “nursery ground” of each and every wine. Therefore, the vineyard sites and their maintenance, in addition to their microclimates, are imperative for the future characteristics of a wine.

The “Mainz Basin“, a freshwater sea which surged thirty million years ago along the Taunus boundary, has calcareous soil comprised of sediments from mussels and crustaceans. This greatly characterizes the incomparable minerality of our wines.

Winemaking

Our wines reflect their true origins and develop natural, intense aromas which convey our distinctive signature. What lies at the heart of our wine production is the very land in which our grapes grow upon. It is what allows us to pursue our dreams and is truly our most valuable possession. Therefore, we strive to retain and ensure the quality of our vineyards for future generations to come. We are therefore attempting to find the best approaches for a sustainable future, and have already implemented many methods to support this goal.

Our main goals are to reduce the usage of raw materials and to employ sources of renewable energy.

Since 2012, we have replaced our entire mode of electric power consumption at the winery with one that is supplied by photovoltaic, renewable energy. Flora and fauna in our vineyards are protected by implementing organic pest control and fostering settlement of beneficial organisms. We nurture biodiversity and its preservation.
