History

The Domaine José Michel et Fils is located at the heart of a renowned wine growing region, in the vineyards of Moussy village, a few minutes from Epernay, the capital of Champagne.

This traditional house that has owned vineyards from 1847 is one of the oldest winegrowing families in the village and uses time honoured methods for making good wine.

From vine in clusters in the previous century to wire-trained vines of today, four generations of this family passionate about wine have contributed to the growth and development of vineyards belonging to the Michel family.

The adventure started in the 19th century with Paul Michel (1860-1936) who was the first to harvest the grapes and bottle the wines in 1912. He was followed by Raymond Michel (1902-1971) who developed the manipulation techniques and extended the production of Champagne as well as the area under grape production.

Lastly, José Michel, winegrower from 1955, a visionary uncompromising regarding quality, adapted each of the three grape varieties of the Champagne region to soil conditions and ideal exposure that can bring the best results.
The family tradition is bound to continue, with three sons and five grandchildren.

Wine making is one of the oldest arts that reflects not only the character of the terroir but also the talents of the wine grower. José Michel has understood this since a very long time.

Proud of his traditional knowledge acquired over four generations, José Michel closely watches over each stage of the production, from pressing to disgorging, from dosing to shipping operations.

Vineyards

The vineyards of Champagne José MICHEL are planted at present with 45% of its area in Pinot Meunier, 45% in Chardonnay and 10% in Pinot Noir. Reputed for his Pinot Meunier, José MICHEL combines these soil conditions advantageously to produce the best champagnes using high quality grapes. In fact, the terroirs of Moussy, Pierry and St Martin d’Ablois are considered very good sectors for growing Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay.

The average age of our vines is 30 years with parcels reaching up to 50 years. The quality of our grapes, so precious, demands that we work efficiently and in a sustained manner (reasoned estimates of inputs, plantation of green cover, limitation of yields …). Our cultivation methods incorporate the latest advances in vineyard management for better protecting the environment.

Winemaking

Good quality champagne cannot be produced without meticulous care during the assembly stage. Every year, during the same period, the Michel family holds its meeting in the cool shade of its cellars or near the stainless steel vats. An unchanging ritual during which it will be decided how the different varieties should be blended for preparing the unique cuvee blendings that have made this family famous.

Based on the sensations, emotions and tastes of each, the subtle mixtures of different grape varieties, crus and reserve wines are decided, for creating and recreating the taste and style that have built the reputation of José Michel brand name. Before being sold, each bottle is allowed to rest for a long time in the silence and darkness of our cellars, while it reaches full maturity.
