History

Paolo Scavino is an historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion.

Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. He started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was 10 years old. A young winemaker who inherited the passion and devotion for the land he belongs to. Through over 60 years of experience his focus has been to invest on important cru of Nebbiolo to show the uniqueness of each terroir.

Their work is inspired by the love and respect they have for their territory and they pursue purity of expression, complexity and elegance for their wines from the three local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo. These values and culture have been carried on and never changed.

Winemaking

“He has an open, sunny face and looks at you with confidence because he knows he will never find the words to defend his world but that his wines can defend themselves… He seems an old-fashioned man but he chose to be a winegrower and knows how to observe progress without any conservative reactionary. For each wine produced, depending on the vintage, the right path is chosen without blindly following tradition and without passively following every innovation. He does not love excess” – Luigi Veronelli, I vignaioli storici, volume n.3, testi di Nichi Stefi, Mediolanum Editori Associati, 1988

Sukula's Barolos surprised positively with their great intensity, complexity and firm body structure - a very confortable surprise as I was having a dinner at their estate in Barolo. As Sukala's second profession is the chef, the wines were not the only ones who shone - thank you Riikka and Jyrki for the warm and overhelming welcome .

Markus Del Monego MW / Best Sommelier in the World 1998, MW (Germany)  tasted  2 wines  from  Paolo Scavino . In a tasting of  28 wines

“Vietti Barolo Riserva 2007 / Dark garnet red with almost black core. Rich and complex nose with Marasca cherries, plums and prunes, blackberries and sweet elderberries, balmy spices and hints of dark chocolate in the background. On the palate excellent weight and length, rich taste with fine acidity and balanced tannins, mature fruit. A wonderful wine with excellent tension on the palate and a promising future. 97 points”
