History

It all started in 1987 when Alice and Paulo were looking for a property that would become their Family Project and where they could make great quality wine. At Quinta da Chocapalha, every member of the family is part of creating the spirit of this project.

Alice and Paulo Tavares da Silva found the estate to carry out their family dream. There was so much to be done, but they quickly took on the necessary work to make Quinta da Chocapalha what it is today.

The Alenquer region was inhabited very early on. Archaeological digs uncovered ceramic objects dating back to the Neolithic period.

Romanisation took place as of the 2nd Century B.C. The decadence of the Roman Empire drew the Visigoths to the region, where Suevi, Alans and Vandals also passed through. With the arrival of the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula in 711, this entire area was occupied by Muslim populations.

Here, vine growing is ancient, dating back to the times of Roman occupation. Even during the period of Muslim rule, wine was still produced in this territory. Throughout centuries, the authorities of the towns surrounding Alenquer mentioned winemaking as an important part of the local economy.

Vineyards

Of the total of 70 hectares, 46 are planted with vineyards. The Pêra Rocha pear orchard, with ‘Pêra Rocha do Oeste’ Protected Designation of Origin, occupies 4.5 hectares and the remaining area is comprised of various woods, some of which are extremely old – supposedly, the oldest date back to the 14th century, and the olive trees create a border along the estate’s boundaries.

The white varieties are Arinto, Viosinho, Gouveio, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. The red varieties are Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Castelão, Syrah, Touriga Franca, Alicante Bouschet, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

However, the harvest is just the final phase of a continuous cycle. The painstaking work to achieve the best quality grapes, a mandatory requirement to fulfil our goals, starts virtually after the harvest.

Grape picking follows specific criteria, established in order to obtain the best qualitative results, according to the fruit’s stage of ripeness. The harvest is carried out separately, variety by variety and plot by plot.
