History

Producing great Chateauneuf du Pape seems to be second nature for Domaine Roger Sabon, which has been bottling its own wine for nearly 100 years. And they show no signs of slowing down.

"This estate has been at the top of its game for many years and any partisan of Rhone Valley wines (especially the southern Rhone) who has not yet tried a wine from Domaine Roger Sabon should make every effort to do so. They produce four separate Chateauneuf du Pape cuvees and have hit home runs in both 2009 and 2010, the finest back-to-back vintages I have ever tasted from this estate..." Robert Parker, Wine Advocate 10/11.

The Sabon family has a long history in Chateauneuf du Pape, and it is one of the oldest documented landholders in the region. Roger Sabon is the father of the three brothers who run the domain today - Jean-Jacques, Denis, and Gilbert. Since 2001, Didier Negron, son-in- law of Jean Jacques, has been the winemaker. Denis and his son Julien take care of the vineyards, and Delphine, daughter of Denis, runs the winery office. Today the domaine owns 15 ha. in Chateauneuf du Pape and 17 ha. in Roquemaure from which they produce Lirac and Cotes du Rhone.

Vineyards

The 'Cuvee Reserve' is aged entirely in old foudres and large vessels, whilst the 'Cuvee Prestige', produced from 90+ year-old vines, sees about 35% new oak.  The rare 'Secret de Sabon', which is mostly (90%) Grenache from 100+ year-old vines is aged for 12 months in one and two year-old demi muids and is produced from miniscule yields of 10 hl/ha.

The three wines come from distinct parcels throughout Chateauneuf-du-Pape, and perfectly balance the style between the modern and the traditional.
