History

The estate history is linked to the ancient church – Pieve San Felice – in Pincis. The church’s history begins in the Etruscan era, runs through the Papacy, is fought over by the municipalities of Florence and Siena, and sees frequent changes of hands between local families. The last of these were the Grisaldi Del Taja, who were among the founders of the Consorzio del Chianti Classico, in the first half of the 1900s.

The early 1970s saw the start of a new development model: the estate was bought by the Allianz Group, which set its sights on enological and territorial excellence. The village was fully and painstakingly restored, through a series of works that accentuated its characteristic art and architecture. An extensive programme of vine replantation was launched on the estate, with a view to bringing out the best in the predominant Sangiovese. The project was complemented by a scientific study of indigenous vines, in partnership with the universities of Florence and Pisa.

In 1982, the Group also purchased the Campogiovanni estate, comprising 20 hectares of vineyard on the slopes of Montalcino, another territory associated with the highest tradition of viticulture and winemaking.

Vineyards

San Felice spans two outstanding territories: Chianti Classico – San Felice, and Montalcino – Campogiovanni.
One estate for each production area, with vineyards and olive groves whose impeccable ‘terroir’ is enhanced by modern cultivation techniques.

The San Felice estate is situated in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, near Siena, in other words, right in the heart of Chianti Classico territory. With over 140 hectares of specialised vineyard, about 17,000 olive trees, the majority of the experimental plantations, the Vitiarium, the cellar and the village with its prestigious hotel complex, San Felice is a rare, not to say unique, blend of production, science, tourism and culture.”

Back in the 1980s, before Brunello had achieved the wide international acclaim it enjoys today, Agricola San Felice bought the Campogiovanni estate, on the south-western side of Montalcino. Fourteen of the estate’s 20 hectares of vineyards are currently used for the production of Brunello. Brunello Campogiovanni is one of the estate’s flagship products, and now enjoys full recognition as one of this territory’s great wines, having won a string of major national and international awards.

The Campogiovanni estate covers 65 hectares on the south-western side of the municipality of Montalcino. The estate is divided into different zones, comprising three different soil types that bring out complementary characteristics from the vines: the calcareous soil yields power, the clay contributes softness and the alluvial soil brings elegance. The land lies broadly flat, with a slight southward slope.

The cellar is located in the estate’s production complex. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled tanks, where the grape must is alternately pumped over and punched down, to maximise the extraction of desirable components from the skins. Fining takes place in barrels and tonneaux, to ensure the utmost balance and that the contribution of the Sangiovese and the soil-related characteristics bring out the best in each other. The maturing process is completed by a period of fining in the bottle.

Winemaking

Agricola San Felice is recognised as an innovative estate, partly because of its ability to spot trends before they develop and partly because of its intense research and experimentation. At the same time, however, its production style accentuates the uniqueness and typical character of its territory by retaining a close attachment to tradition.

The estate’s history confirms this status, as witness the creation of Vigorello in the late 1960s, which marked a new approach to winemaking and was the forerunner of the famous Supertuscans. This was followed in the 1970s by the creation of Poggio Rosso, a first, and at the time rare, example of a Chianti Classico ‘cru’.

But it was perhaps the estate’s early research into indigenous grape varieties in the late 1980s, that brought the San Felice production philosophy to full fruition. Unlike the majority of producers, who were shifting towards international varieties at the time, San Felice identified a number of forgotten, indigenous grape varieties in its experimental vineyard, the Vitiarium, and embarked on a programme of blending them with Sangiovese.

Many years of work went into this, driven by a sincere commitment to improvement, and the awareness that the most important discoveries are always rooted in tradition.
