Thinking about all that’s happened in 2014 can be overwhelming. For one, it’s hard to believe that buying something (especially a bottle of wine) can actually make someone’s life a bit better. But it can, and it has.

Because of the fair trade premium – a few cents built into the price of every bottle of Stellar wine – we’ve been able to see a few great Stellar Foundation projects to fruition. Take the mobile clinic, for example. It means upgraded health care for over 300 people, and we think that’s pretty big. We’ve also been able to buy a sports field and a bus, upgrade local schools and meet people who share our vision along the way. It goes without saying that we could never have done it without all of you.

The continued support of our loyal customers and partnersreminds us that we’re building a wine business that stands for more than tasting notes and mouth feel – we’re in this to do the work we love in a way that honours our planet and the people that make it so awesome.

It’s shown us that believing in what we do, and the way we do it, pays off. It reminds us that organic is a way of life, not just a fad or fluffy philosophy, and that making wine this way is really rewarding. We’re looking forward to the next harvest and everything the New Year will bring!

History

Stellar Winery is South Africa’s largest producer of fine organic, fair trade wines. The cellar is situated at Kys Halte, just outside the Namaqualand town of Vredendal in the Western Cape Province, an area famous for its spring flowers and the only semi-arid Biosphere hotspot in the world.

Vineyards

Stellar sources organic grapes from a number of independent farms, which, together with the cellar, bottling and packaging plant make up a fair trade structure, the Stellar Winery Multi-Estate. Workers on the farms and in the winery, including seasonal workers, together own 26% of the enterprise through shares in the Stellar Winery Empowerment Trust.

Innovation is one of our strengths and since our wines first appeared on the market in 2003 we have broken new ground in both winemaking and social development. Our no-added-sulphur wine range, created in 2004, has been so successful that today Stellar is the world’s leading producer in this category.

The fair trade programme began in 2004 and over the years has delivered to its beneficiaries a portion of the enterprise and developmental initiatives aimed at improving living and working conditions. The Stellar Foundation, a non-profit organization, manages development projects on the farms and in the communities from which the Stellar workers come. We export bottled and bulk wine to markets in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America. The number of ranges, labelling flexibility and in-house design capacity give customers a wide selection from which to choose products tailored to their markets.

Winemaking

Stellar Winery is one of South Africa’s top producers and exporters of organic, fair trade wines. Situated just outside of the Namaqualand town of Vredendal, the cellar processes grapes from farms stretching from Bulshoek Dam in the south to the cool climate vineyards of Koekenaap, close to the mouth of the Olifants River on South Africa’s west coast.

The uniqueness of Namaqualand infuses our business and our product. Glorious carpets of spring flowers, hot sunny summer days, cold nights with an awe-inspiring canopy of stars overhead and quirky, straight-talking people are what this region of South Africa’s Western Cape Province is all about. Learn to love our wine and the chances are that you’ll end up loving us too.

Meanwhile, we’d like to invite you to take a quick tour of our small universe. Welcome!
