Written Notes

The nose was the shiest of the flight, with faint traces of brick, tar, caramel and uncracked nuts still in their shells. The nose widened a bit in the glass, and the palate left no doubt as to its quality. The fireplace qualities were blazing on its wound and taut palate, which had tremendous breed and length. The tannins, alcohol, vitamins and minerals made a case that the 1982 was a balanced breakfast, indeed

Even the 3 plus hours of decanting didn’t slow it down; in fact it needed all that and more to express its considerable charms. Here we have one of the greatest Barbarescos ever made and I found myself being repeatedly captivated by its slightly softer, more ethereal charms, alongside its more buxom cousin. Flowers, ripe cherries, mushrooms abound on the nose, again there is that licorice and earthiness as well. It opens with both delicacy and power; you can almost the taste the roses along with the spices on the sweet mid palate, with beautifully buffered tannins. Barolo was often called “the King” and Barbaresco “the Queen.” We can see why here, for there is still majesty to its more gentle allure. The impressive 1982 structure is evident as it builds to a soil-infused, resonating finish. As one of our attendees rightly noted, with the accompanying berries of the Grouse dish, the acidity and fruit here rallied with particular panache. This has much life ahead. 96-97 Points
